hey.
ive suffored from ocd since my early teenhood, if theres anything u want to know drop me a mssg. im not v good at writing and speelings rubbish but hope uy ou find this useful.
ocd is a wide and varied as the people who suffer from it. if all the ocd sufferers in the world lived in the same city, it would be the 3rd biggest in the usa! ITS NOT ALL TO DO WITH HAND WASHING , which is the popular stereotype, and also why many people, like me, dont get diagnosed til later in life, because we never assiacted ourselves with the commonly percieved view of ocd.
very very basically, ocd is firstly 'obsessions', eg obsessional unwanted and intrusive thoughts, could be about fear of harming other, fear or harming yourself, inaprropriate religious or sexual thoughts, fear of contamnation...many others...
these thoughts are actually fairly common, but most people arnt too bothered by them, and they rarely occur and pass by unnoticed. ocd sufferer find them distressing. the more and more the sufferer trys to block out these thoughts, the more freaquently they occur, until they become over whealming and cause anxiety.
secondly, there is 'compulsions'. subcontiously, to block out the anxiety caused by these thoughts (ocd is an anxiety disorder) sufferers perform repeated tasks ( checking, washing for eg although hair pulling/skin picking is common) or find comfort in hoarding or symatry/ familiatry.
ocd sufferers usual feel that their compulsions are out of their control.
pure 'o' ocd is also common, in which the sufferer has intrusive unwanted thoughts, by which they are disturbed. as , is ocd personality disorder, in which the suffeer feels compelled to organise things catigorigally or symentrically, but does not suffer from anxiety caused by their thoughts.
theres plenty of good sites for research if you google ocd, although getting a diagnosis online is not recommended. and im on a brilliant (myspacish) community ocd site (i wont put the link) but its called ocd tribe. i'm also on the myspazz and fb group sites!
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or OCD is different from Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder so please don't confuse the two. Although they seem similar they are actually quite different and you must make sure you get the right information.
In your first post bob--says--hi you've said OCPD, the information you've been given on this thread is for OCD.
The confusion needs to be clarified in order to make sure you get the right information to help you.
This is the information about Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder that will soon be going up on the main site-
Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder-
Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder begins by early adulthood, and is characterized by a preoccupation with control, orderliness and perfection.
Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) is often confused with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). OCD is Egodystonic [a medical term referring to behaviors, e.g. dreams, impulses, compulsions], where OCPD Egosyntonic [a medical term referring to behaviors, values, feelings]. This is to say, those with OCD know their behavior is problematic where the symptoms of OCPD are part of a person's personality and are generally unaware of problematic behaviors.
Those who are suffering from OCPD do not generally feel the need to repeatedly perform ritualistic actions (such as excessive hand-washing), while this is a common symptom of OCD. Instead, people with OCPD tend to stress perfectionism above all else, and feel anxious when they perceive that things are not "right".
SYMPTOMS:
At least four of these symptoms must be present:
Absorbed with details, lists, order, organization, rules or schedules to such an extent that the purpose of the activity is lost ("can't see the forest for the trees").
Perfectionistic to a degree that interferes with completing the task.
Workaholic (works to exclusion of leisure activities).
Saves worthless items of no real or sentimental value.
Being overconscientious, scrupulous, and inflexible about matters of morality, ethics, or values (not accounted for by cultural or religious identification).
Reluctance to delegate tasks or to work with others unless they submit to exactly his or her way of doing things.
Adopting a miserly spending style toward both self and others; money is viewed as something to be hoarded for future catastrophes.
Showing rigidity and stubbornness.
Urge to perfect every little thing.
CAUSES:
This disorder tends to occur in families and thus may have a genetic component. People with obsessive-compulsive personality disorder believe that their preoccupations are appropriate. They tend to be high achievers and have a sense of urgency about their actions. They may become extremely upset if others disturb their rigidly ordered routines.
TREATMENT:
Treatment for OCPD normally involves psychotherapy and self help. Medication is generally not indicated for this personality disorder in isolation, but prozac has been prescribed with success. Anti-anxiety medication will reduce the feeling of fear and SSRI's can replace the chronic frustration with a sense of well-being, as well as reducing stubbornness and negative rumination. Keep in mind, though, that most people with OCPD will try to deny that anything is mentally wrong with them, so they usually won't ever buy into getting any psychological or medical treatment for the whole irrational mental state, and always while living in denial about it being a mental problem will choose to live without therapy and continue to suffer with it, and let it overpower them.
I have OCD and have all my life. But not OCPD.
The difference in simple terms is that OCD you can tell your thoughts/behaviours are irrational, and in OCPD you don't recognise this. In saying that, i sometimes think i with i didn't realise that mine were irrational, because it makes you think you are mad b/c you must do things anyway. So really, they are very closely related, and the 'personality' word does not mean there is anything more wrong with you, there can just be some stigma attached.
Sorry if this all sounds nasty - im half asleep :P
pm me if u want to talk about it, i have experience with all types of symptoms in the OCD spectrum - i mean like really ALMOST ALL haha :P
take care, keep going,
Kat xoxo
