profanity filters...

Not that it really much matters, but I'm kind of curious... I just learned that at least one vulgar word is censored in at least one forum on here, but I was kind of surprised cause I hadn't seen things censored on here before, and I didn't think that they were in the forums... So the word that was censored isn't near as bad as some that were not - it's used as vulgar slang, but it also has several legitimate uses, and I wouldn't have considered it a swearword on its own, whereas none of the swearwords I could think of were censored...

Anyway, what I'm wondering is are there different profanity filters for different forums? And if not, how on Earth did you decide which words should be censored?

The swear filters don't always work and if you see words that you feel are offensive then you should report them to the Moderators and they will remove them! They can't be expected to see episode because there are far too many threads but as members we all share the responsibility to report when these type of instances occur!

Hope that helps

um... that's really not what I meant at all - I have absolutely no objection to swearing in some contexts, I'm just curious about how it's determined what's filtered and what isn't.

All i can suggest then is you have a look at the rules and if that doesen't answer your concerns then PM one of the moderators and ask them?

Best Wishes

I've read the rules plenty of times, and I know they don't mention profanity specifically, but I wouldn't have checked anyway as my question isn't what's allowed, but rather what the site does.

Sorry, the censors do always work - however in some forums, such as Ranting and Venting and Serious, they are switched off, for obvious reasons.

You can always see if a forum is being censored down in the 'posting options' box at the bottom of every forum.

The list of words chosen was mainly down to the default filter settings, but overall a balance is attempted to be found between number of complaints if the word is censored against complaints if it isn't :)

I don't promise to have got the balance just right, but it is a tricky one - every person is different, every country sees words differently and every different person can and certainly will argue with me if they feel a word that offends them isnt censored, and a word they are used to hearing and they are confortable with is censored.

We don't have a list is swear words, say in the rules because the swear filter is not part of the rules. It is a general tool for improving the 'niceness' of RYL, and members are not punished for saying those words, only prevented from doing so. We don't wish to ever punish members so there is no need to provide a list of words to avoid. Quite simply at the time of posting the word, RYL will tell you that we are not happy displaying the word, that is easiest for all sides, and means we don't need a hypocritical page of swear words!

Hope that helps. Please feel free to PM me with the word and we can discuss it in context.

Aye, you said this in the swearing in chat thread too - and that as a society now we need things spelt out for us, no pun intended. However, as was said before we hope that people can use a little initative and it does break the being generally unpleasant rule.

You have an PM invitation from Harley though so maybe you could bring this up with him if it's what you feel =)

Take care and hope you have the answer to your question now.

Okay, that explains it. Cause yeah, a while ago I was both upset and drunk (bad combination) and ended up listing all the swear words I could think of in R&V, and since none of them were censored, I was kinda surprised that something less bad than some of the ones I'd posted before was censored in another part... I normally don't swear anyway, so I'd never noticed anything was censored elsewhere until I saw people trying to get around it...

No, I didn't say anything about it not being in the rules in the swearing in chat thread. I only said the part about people needing things spelled out for them, and that was a comment on what I've seen of general behavior on the Internet, not that I personally need it spelled out for me. In fact most swearwords I've never even said out loud, and have only typed approximately twice when I was quite drunk and very close to doing something much more destructive than swearing. And furthermore, if you continue reading the part of my post you quoted, you'd find that I said quite specifically that I wasn't asking what's allowed, but rather I was simply curious about how the censors work since I only just discovered they exist. You might also notice that I only mentioned the rules because the post before mine had suggested that I read the rules. So I really don't appreciate being criticized for not being able to decide for myself what's appropriate when all I asked was what a piece of software does.

I wasn't criticising - but I don't particularly want to discuss it with you when you've got so defensive and a little rude. If you want to talk, more then happy to discuss in PM as I don't feel here would be the place to quote and bring up the past. I was intending on it being constructive more than anything else.

And how is explaining the rules to me a constructive response to my statement that my question was not about the rules? It sure as hell sounded critical to me as the only implication I can see is you think I shouldn't need to ask anything about how profanity is handled on the site.

I don't believe the censor should be muddled with RYL rules. We do not give points for swearing or using censored words - we only discourage their use.

Anybody wishing to know what words are censored can simply email the Mods or myself to ask, and they will get a reply back right away.

But listing, in the rules, which is entirely the wrong place, a whole load of uncensored swear words, along with a text tag that says "Please don't use these disgusting words, even though I just did" "Oh and by the way don't use them but if you do we won't do anything"

The filters are the same across all forums, just that some forums have it turned off (as have PM's in the forum)

You can always see if it is on or not by looking at the posting options for that forum, down the bottom.

You can also preview your post, which will censor anything as it would in the post once posted.

Well now I have considerable doubt about my level of maturity as I was seriously tempted to email you or the mods just to see an authority figure list swearwords

But good to know about the preview post thing - I didn't think of that - and I'm happy that I can see what the censors do without actually posting anything (I'd much rather test it myself than just get a list of what's censored).

And as amusing as I'd find it to see a list of swearwords in the rules, I wasn't suggesting we should have one I was just being bitter and pessimistic about some people's ability to just be decent without being explicitly told what to do.
