passports
I'm wanting to apply for mine but not sure how to go about it - I was on my mums yeaaars ago, I assume I'm gonna need to apply for a normal passport?
do they really take as long as the gov website claims? 6 weeks seems like a long time. :/

Yes and yes I'm afraid. You can pay for fast track, but it's dead expensive. When are you going away?

Yes, you will need to apply for an adult passport.
Personally, I've always sent mine off through the post offices service. In terms of the waiting period, it all depends on how many application they have. I got my first adult passport two years ago and it took about 4-5 weeks to come back.
You going anywhere exciting?!

do you like my potato?

Definitely get it checked at the post office before you send it off. If something's been done incorrectly then it'll get sent back and delay the process!
I don't know if it is moving any quicker now, but over the summer the wait for new passports was much, much longer than 6 weeks due to the demand.

My boyfriend has just received his first adult passport. He did it online and it took about 3 months I think. It is longer at the moment as there's been a huge delay in the system. Also, if it's your first adult one at some point during the process, right towards the end, they'll invite you for an interview just to check you're who you said you are.
Provisional licences aren't accepted as ID in a lot of places. I'm not sure why or if they're easier to copy or something then actual driving licences but that's just been the case for around 5yrs so getting a passport is probably a better option unless you're also planning on learning to drive soon. There used to be another form of card ID that they'd accept. I can't remember what it's called but it's really cheap and quick to get sorted. Though, if you're thinking about going away at new yr then apply for a passport asap.

So didn't know they could be done online. That makes me dread my renewal a lot less

it is also interesting to read how getting a passport works in other countries. because i can most definitely NOT fill out a form at the post office or online ;)
but they are just as slow with making them here as they are where you are. hope you get yours soon!
ps; arent the biometric photographs just horrible???

The embassy of your country is a good place to start with getting passports.

Its good to have a passport so that you have it if you need it and dont have to worry about delays. A few years ago in US they fell behind by several months.
