Going into general hospital.

Hi,

I have an appointment booked for an operation because I keep getting really painful ingrown toenails. They've tried to fix the problem before with an operation, and it prevented the problem for a long time (I had the operation when I was about 12, and I haven't had any problems since apart from the last year or so). My question is this: what can I expect in hospital? It's been such a long time since I've been there, and I was on the children's ward last time so it'll be different. I'm also worried about how much time I'll need to take off of work and college, my doctor has absolutely told me under no circumstances am I to go back this week (my operation is tomorrow) but as any of you at college will understand, the workload isn't going to go away while I'm not able to do it. I have asked one of my course mates to take notes for me, and the lecturer sends power points of lessons and homework in emails at the end of class anyway but it's not the same as physically being there.

My PAT (personal academic tutor) has been really understanding and said it's absolutely fine and not to worry, that this is the best time of year for "outside life" to affect college because we're just starting to get into the course. I'm still worried though.

Does anyone have any suggestions, or even just a hug?

Hi there,

I can understand how concerned you are (I also have the same issues with toenails and face having an operation).

I can't really say what to expect from hospital in your situation because it's all different and depends on the hospital/length of stay/discharge policy etc. The best person for you to ask is your doctor or nurse when you're there, to try to put your mind at ease.

It can be stressful when you know work will be waiting when you're discharged, but perhaps if they do end up keeping you in, you could ask someone to bring in some of the notes or work so you could be doing a bit in there? Hospitals are boring! You'll probably appreciate something to do!

I hope you're able to get support from your PAT so you don't fall too behind. And I hope today has gone well (unless I have times mixed up as I guess your operation is today).

If you look on the hospitals website they often have an area which tells you what the patients should expect to happen so i think that might be the best thing to look at as it is very dependent on what hospital you're going to and what you're having done. Hope it goes (or had gone depending on time zones) well.

I assume you've had the operation by now? I came here to say I've had the exact same operation on both of my big toenails. You really do need about 2 weeks off as your feet will be VERY painful and you will need your dressings changed frequently by a nurse (I found this incredibly painful too, they told me to take codeine an hour before).

Keep your feet elevated for the first few days to lessen the throbbing.

And I hope they told you this, but be prepared for the nails to grow back. It can happen, and happened with me about a year later.

Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes but when you look back, everything is different…

I've had the procedure done about 8 or so times, and it really isn't anything to worry about. It's usually done outpatient, and they only need to use local anesthetic (I could give exact doses, one time I had to tell the person performing the operation what to do). It takes about 30 minutes, and I would usually walk out. After that it was the usual "change the dressings every day, change your socks and take Motrin." Oh, and I got a light duty chit for one or two weeks.

Hi there,

I was just wondering how things went/are going?

I hope you were able to get your questions answered.

I'm struggling with everything to be honest. I have tons of work to catch up on, and when I texted my friend to ask her to keep everything for me/take it into college today she told me she forgot. Not only did she forget to give me handouts and stuff, I now have an assignment due on Sunday that my college friend hasn't given me the notes for!

I told my tutor today and she gave me some of them, but I think theres a big chunk missing because they don't make sense. I could actually cry!

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're feeling so stressed and that your friend let you down.

Could you ask your tutor to go through them a little more with you if they're not making sense? Or possibly ask for a few days extension?

I did ask for an extension, and she said "I think we'll leave the deadline as it is just now, but if you're struggling with it email me BEFORE Friday and we can discuss it then." I have tomorrow off anyways for online classes, but they're paused at the moment as both of them have assignments to hand in for.

I came into college today and found out I have 5 final submission assignments, all due in the next two weeks. The logical thing to do is to do them by due date, but instead I just want to hide under my duvet and not do any of them.

Hey,

I think the first step would be to email this one tutor as soon as possible and discuss extending the deadline or getting some help with it.

It sounds like you have a lot going on, and it's making you feel overwhelmed. Would it help to write down a list of things you need to get done and some small steps you can make towards them..?

I know it can be tempting to hide from things you need to do, I've done it a lot over the years, but one thing I've learnt is that it's always there when you come out of hiding. Instead, doing little bits at a time help to chip it away.

Perhaps it'd help to plan your time over the next couple of weeks so you have plenty of breaks and fun things to add in as well?

The tutor said no to extending the deadline, but she did give me feedback on what I'd previously submitted to her. I got 17/20 for a child abuse assignment I sent her, so when I asked for an extension she said "no, you won't need it." Which I can understand if I got that mark, I'm well pleased!

I'm feeling better about the whole college situation today. Sometimes it just helps for someone to say, "you're not doing as badly as you think you are."

Thank you :).

I've asked the mods to lock this thread, as I feel my original questions/issues are now resolved :). Thank you for the input everyone, feeling generally quite positive about everything now.
