It's getting to August and I've only had 1 period this year which was back in March/April time. I've had irregular periods for as long as I can remember but they've never been this bad, and every time I told someone they put it down to stress.
I've been having brown discharge (ew sorry) every month for about 5 days, but that's about it. I used to have brown discharge right before a period, but now this is all I'm getting.
Google is no help, everything I find is related to pregnancy and I am a virgin.
Should I go to the doctors about it?
If so, is it likely I'd need a blood test?
Its always best to get checked out. I have pcos and havent had any this year yet, I see a gynae regularly though. They like you to have at least 3 a year to minimise any potential complications in future. They will prob do some blood tests first to check hormone levels and prob refer you for a scan to check everything ok. Then you might need meds to induce a period. Thats what i have , though for other reasons I dont use them. Anyway, yeh always best to check out anything thats not normal for you.

I am terrified of blood tests however... What is the worst that would happen if I refuse and don't get it checked out? To be honest I'd like to try birth control to see if that regulates my periods (and maybe help my acne which I have a suspicion is related) before even considering a blood test... (Which I probably wont have anyway!)
I have endometriosis but when I was going to drs (before diagnosed, before even suspected at all) about missing periods for months on end, periods coming too often, etc, they'd give me the pill without any offer of blood tests or scans. I think it may depend on your doctor what they do. they cant force u to do anything, but can give suggestions. x
I didn't have a period for just over a year at one point, when I was about 15.
They told me it could either be stress or down to a medication I was taking.
Its best to get it checked out x
I'm fine! Totally fine. I don't know why it's coming out all loud and squeaky, 'cause really, I'm fine!
I also have PCOS and it sounds very similar to a hormonal imbalance. I've had the same symptoms (discharge, few periods) since I was 15.
I was on the pill for a while and that helped but I've been off for a while and still not completely regular.

Thanks for the replies everyone, they've all been helpful <3
I have an appointment next month for a review of medication, but that is with a male doctor and I don't think I'd feel comfortable sharing this! The nearest appointment with a female goes past the date I run out of medication. I think I might ask for a repeat to last me until then though so I can mention this.

EDIT: Talked to my Mum, we're going to order the repeat prescription and reschedule the appointment to be with a female. I'll bring it up then. The lady was respectful of the fact I was afraid of blood tests last time I was supposed to have one so hopefully it will be the same case. Thanks all!

I'm not really sure if birth control will help to much, but I think its worth a shoot, but your hormones might be out of wack for a week or two and you might get more acne then usual.
I know you're going to the GP soon, but another thing worth considering is your weight. Lower BMIs or body fat percentage can lead to periods ceasing, and that might begin with discharge/spotting.
I know a handful of people who had really irregular periods which was regulated using birth control, my step-sister included, which is why I want to try that. Unless the doctor thinks there is a reason besides hormones behind it of course!
Also, my weight / BMI is healthy and doesn't change much, so I don't think that's the cause in my case.
I've gone a long time without periods (due to BMI+++) and went on the pill and that regulated them perfectly. Also got rid of spots and significantly reduced my pms and extreme cattiness around that time. Had to come off it though due to high blood pressure. Although in recent times, while my cycle has been long (~35 days) they are fairly regular now. Would recommend trying the pill though. I was on yasminelle which a low dose version and it worked great.
