Alternative Medication?

Hi...

I think I'm allowed to post this, I'm sorry if I'm not.

For quite a while now, at least a year possibly two, I forget, I have been on 60mg of Citalopram daily. The longer I'm on this the more crisis' I seem to be getting and I'm finding that my self-harm is creeping up again. I have been on Mirtazapine and Amitriptiline before and neither have worked.

I was just wondering if:

a) Anybody has had a similar experience with anti-depressants losing effect

b) Any other anti-depressants that I might be put on

c) How to bring this up with somebody because my CPN is currently off on long-term sick. (3rd one to do this to me)

Thanks,

Vicki

I'm on Fluoxetine though, which you haven't mentioned and is an anti depressant. && could you not just bring it up with your doctor?

I was on the highest dose of Citalopram-- worked for a while, and then it seemed to stop working some how. So they changed me over to Venlfaxine, I have most recently been on THAT at the highest dose for a year ish which hasn't helped, and so now I'm beginning to wean off that to go onto a completely different class, an MOAI. So it definitely can be done-- can you go back to your GP and explain to start the process up?

*hugs* for the crisis' and self harming xx

Anti depressants can lose their effectiveness after a while. There are any number of medications that you could try. Best to speak to a professional about that. Do you have a gp or psychiatrist you can see?

Anti-depressants may lose the effectiveness over a period of time but also might not be the right medication for you to control the symptoms...but your best to talk to your GP about it and find a solution. Just bring it up with your GP, saying like i think the medications isn't working properly and previously and i'm getting such and such symptoms reoccuring.

The doctor might put you on another anti-depressant...the one that comes to mind is lexapro (escitalopram) which is like a refined version of citalopram with fewer side effects compared to the original citalopram (since it kind of worked previously), or even a totally another drug itself. Hope that helps!
