Random facts that made you smile

One of the producers and writers of Golden Girls (my ultimate happy show), Tom Whedon, had a son. And his son was Joss Whedon! Aka the Firefly (and more) guy!

What random facts have you come across that just made you happy/smile?

I love Firefly.

Watching the Olympic games opening ceremony I learned that Japan's national anthem is called Kimigayo, which is also the name of a plant I'm growing at work, so not only can I put the name of the plant into context, I can now pronounce it correctly too.

And you thought your Joss Whedon fact was nerdy. =B

I was reading your reply and actually my first thought was ‘this is awesome, I need to add a new category of nerdiness to my repertoire and start learning about plant names’ (genuinely).

I’ve recently got rather ‘into’ Etymology.

Actually, wait….are you suggesting that Golden Girls and Firefly are nerdy???

Fire any plant name questions my way if you want!

And Firefly is nerdy, yes. I don't know what Golden Girls is.

Sharks existed before trees

As a shark enthusiast, I like this fact

I'm fine! Totally fine. I don't know why it's coming out all loud and squeaky, 'cause really, I'm fine!

Who else is fine?!?!?

Keeping Up Appearances is the BBC's most successful export.

As a massive Keeping Up Appearances fan it pleases me greatly.

^I didn't realise that video was old and some of the rolling news gave me a shock!

I love fun facts so much that I introduced Fun Fact Friday in my workplace which involves me demanding that colleagues tell me fun facts or I won't be their friend :fredgeorge:

One of my favourites that they produced is that in world war 2, the RAF discovered radar which helped the British troops shoot down German planes at night. They didn't want the Germans to know about the radar discovery so to explain the sudden improvement in night time vision, the government said that carrots help you see in the dark. They ran advertising campaigns and the like to convince the world that it was true and that the British pilots ate lots of them. And so that's how that myth first became popular.

No other sadness in the world would do
