I am currently:
Computer help (specifically setting up multiple monitors)

I have a laptop which i'm taking to uni that has a 15.4" widescreen. However, I find that when I view small text for an extended period of time on my laptop (as I would be doing when writing essays etc. at uni, my eyes are strainign as my eyesight isn't the best and my head starts to ache. I also have 17" non-widescreen TFT monitor for my desktop computer and find that that is fine for viewing text on. I have tried connecting the 17" monitor to my laptop but the image shown on the monitor is still a widescreen image with a band of black above abnd below. How can I configure the settings on my laptop to get it to show a full, non-widescreen image on my 17" monitor?

I am running windows xp media centre edition if that helps.

I don't know Windows XP at all really, but I would guess that there's probably a setting for which screen you're using as the primary display, and setting it to the external one would make it not be wide screen. There might also be a resolution setting that would include widescreen ones, and also regular non-widescreen resolutions that would be streched on your laptop screen but normal on the external monitor. I could tell you how to set either one of those on a Mac which obviously wouldn't help, but maybe it'll at least give you an idea of what you're (maybe) looking for...

But also, why not set your laptop to display text larger? You can do that either by zooming in in a specific application, like if you're typing a paper in Word you can easily set it to display the document as something like 150% actual size, so it's not so small, or you can set the entire display to a lower resolution, which makes everything look bigger.

Go to Control Panel -> Display -> Settings, click the secondary monitor box (blue box with a 2 in it) and adjust the screen resolution as necessary. Select the TFT as the main monitor from the drop bown box and that should, in theory, sort it.

"jiggery pokery"?

I'll have to use that one someday! There's no doubt classes in med schools that should use that title.
