Citalopram

I've been on citalopram for 9 months now. Went up to 20mg 6 months ago. Have been on prozac before,

I came off citalopram once before. Just wondered what the recommended dose is for intrusive thoughts/paranoia. For background see my policophobia thread.

I'm on 20mg right now but feel I might be better on 30mg. I have just started taking the tablet in the afternoon so it is still higher levels in my system when I get to my worst in the evening.

Does anyone know?

thanks

Hi there,
You will need to talk to your healthcare provider about this like your GP or psych if you see one. We can't really advise you on how much medication you should be taking as you have already been prescribed it from your doctor. It's best to go to your doctor and ask them as all medications effect people differently. Forgive me if I read your post wrong though and you are not implying this at all.

40mg is what finally really helped me with intrusive thoughts, but as Rainbow said, you'd have to talk to the prescriber. Do not change the dose without their recommendation. I hope you feel better. :)

Everyone is different. To totally get rid of my intrusive thoughts I was put on 60mg and another medication to boost the effects of the citalopram.

I found Citalopram didn't help me but I haven't suffered from paranoia, just depression and anxiety. I didn't find that it helps with intrusive thoughts but everyone is different so maybe ask to increase your dose and if it still isn't helping, try a different medication.

I can only echo what others have said - speak to your prescriber and let them know what you think. It may be that the meds will need adjusting/changing.

Meds do have different effects on different people - but it may be that your prescriber can explain the "working dose" for the symptoms you are experiencing.

Thank you for the replies. I wasn't suggesting that I changed my dose without speaking to doctors but at the moment I am getting therapy through a charity and tablets and that's it really. Disappointed with the service from Docs.

I was recently (less than 6 months ago) bereaved twice my Dad and his mother a week apart, GP was very arrogant and stuff and didn't listen to me, I told him about the bereavements and next sentence he said was 'Not like anyone just died is it?' I was shocked he wasn't listening.

I would complain about that. That is just shocking. Ask to see practice manager, or failing that PALS.

You have the right to complain - I know someone whose daughter last year had a baby who was born stillborn. She went to see her GP, and complained she was getting mastitis and leaking breast milk (which was very painful). One of the first questions she was asked is "are you still breastfeeding" when it was clearly written about her baby's condition. Her husband complained, and they got a written apology. You're no different, so complaining is worth it.

I agree with the above poster, perhaps you should enter in a complaint about that doctor, I have been treated very poorly by GPs in the past and I will no longer hesitate to complain as my last complaint was handled very professionaly. Also, seeing it from another view, although the doctor was out of line with what they said, they may not have realised that it isnt the right thing to say. I know that sounds bad, but some people can be a bit daft under pressure. So pointing it out to them may be exactly what you both need.
Hope that made sense.
