CBT

so im pretty un-educated with the whole counselling thing but my counsellor told me that i seem to be a "CBT girl" as in she thinks this method is most apporpriate for me to help with my self harm and bulimia. I agreed to give it a go and shes told me to write things down etc but i was wondering if someone could explaim to me what exactly it is, what it envolves and how it is supposed to work and how effective it has been for those of you who have used it.

everything will be ok in the end, if it's not ok then it's not the end.

Cognitive behaviour helps you to connect your thoughts and feelings to situations, and to learn ways to change some of those automatic negative thoughts into more helpful ones.

This website is very good at explaining more about how CBT works, try having a read of that. :)

I did it for a while and found it quite helpful, and it is one of the most effective types of therapy.

Good luck with it, I hope you find it useful. x

I did CBT for depression and anxiety management, it worked really well for me. The work i did was all based on present thoughts and feelings, and not divulging into the past, which suited me.
Hope you benefit from it also.

it REALLY worked for me, although mine was mostly OCD based and once that was under some control it got much easier to work on other stuff. alot of it is about finding faulty thinking that leads to feeling bad and changing the thoughts so they are more realistic

this is my magical medicine cabinet. Left to right they contain: courage, hope, calmness, and strength.

The magical part: They NEVER run out, so borrow some any time you want.

I've never had it but I like the sound of CBT because it is addressing the things that are problematic now and it teaches you to break bad thought patterns and catch yourself when you start going into one of those negative "everyone hates me" type moods.

CBT is based on a sort of triangle system:
thoughts lead to feelings lead to behaviour.
check out this link my psych gave me:
http://www.rcpsych.ac.uk/mentalhealt...ments/cbt.aspx

it explains things better than i can after a session!

I personally didn't get on with it at all from my anorexia. I didn't like having to write down my thoughts and feelings. I never really wrote much. You just have to keep a food diary and in comments write down anything significant that your thinking/doing. Hope it works out for you. You have to work hard to really see the benefits. I think that was probably my downfall. Good Luck. x
