Motivation

I am in the process of being assessed for a diagnosis but I have found my motivation becoming worse and worse and it is effecting my university studies. On a bad day even things like going to the shops or walking next door to return a book or driving home seem really hard. I never used to be like this.

I was just wondering how other people dealt with a lack of motivation? How do you manage to study? I've been on meds (Fluoxetine and Citalopram) but they didn't help especially.

Thanks x

Hey
I don't have any advice I'm afraid, because I'm in exactly the same situation.
Just wanted to say you're not alone.

these things don't always help me but they've all i've got.

when i need to do the absolute minimum
1. say you have 3 subjects to do: pick 1 to do, one to ignore and one to think about later, dependiing on how behind you are and how much the tutor likes you.
2. for the one subject i say "i am not going to do anything else until i have done this 1 piece of work"
3. set a finish time - a reasonable one - and something you're going to do at that time (like having dinner)
4. decide before you start on a break - if it's going to take an hour in all, maybe after 30 mins
5. i head up the paper so it's not blank
6. then i say "3, 2, 1, GO" and write, trying not to even think about it, just writing whatever i can think of.
that way i can normally get a couple of grades below what teachers expect, but it's better than nothing.

for 15 minutes before you start, write down all the reasons FOR doing the work and all the reasons AGAINST (capital letters help lol) that way it helps get all the worries and lack of motivation in terms you set, naming things can be very helpful.

but to be honest sometimes you get to a point where you just can't make yourself, and i think that's ok, because it's not soemthing you're choosin, it's part of where you are in life at the moment.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not on any meds at the moment. I'm not entirely sure what is going on with the diagnosis. My psych, cpn and the p/d clinic all said they would contact my uni m/h co-ordinator before I came back to uni with appointments (I broke up for summer in june and didn't have an address for september then and I didn't want it sent home because of my parents opening my mail) so I need to wait until I see her to find out what is going on.

I was on Fluoxetine at the start of the summer but took myself off it (long story but wasn't in the emotional state to start new meds without proper superivison) so on no meds at the moment.

Thanks for the advice 'waiting in the dark', will give it a go.
