I am currently:
Quetiapine

I understand that quetiapine can increase cholesterol in the blood, I've been on quetiapine for around 18 months and just had a blood test which showed high levels of cholesterol in my blood.

I can't speak to my doctor about it for another 2 weeks or so, and i didn't have a blood test before starting quetiapine to compare both results to see if it is the quetiapine that has increased my cholesterol.

But i was wondering if anyone knows that if it is due to quetiapine and if i stop taking it my cholesterol will go back down to normal or will i still have high cholesterol?

Or has anyone been in the same situation and the doctor has just kept you on quetiapine even though it may be the cause of the problem?

nic

Oh, that's interesting to know, I'm on quetiapine too.

Could you phone your doctor to ask about it? I would definitely phone to ask first, rather than stopping the meds.

Hi,
I think phoning your dr is a good idea.
Im on queriapine myself, but i dont know about my cholesterol. I would decide on what to do about The cholesterol depending on how high it is. If it is only skightly above The recommended lvl, i probably wouldnt Do anything about it.

The only reason i found out was because i convinced myself i had diabetes, which i don't, which can also be caused by quetiapine, so when i was searching that a few things came up about it increasing cholesterol and loads of other things.

I didn't get a blood test done because i was on quetiapine, but for something else, but my doctor did all the blood tests for antipscyhotics aswell while i was getting bloods done anyways. I don't know many people who have blood tests done for quetiapine but i guess it is a good idea and im so glad my doctor did it haha.

I'm not going to stop taking my meds until i have spoke to my doctor, i know that would be really bad, but there's no way i can see her until my appointment in a few weeks, just wondering what others did if they've been in the same situation to me.

I was never told about any of these kind of side effects by my doc or psych though, but they are mentioned on reliable websites that i've seen and in the leaflet you get with the meds.

But i am glad that your bf's cholesterol came down due to diet thumbelina, i was dreading having to take more medication!

I get my blood Tested every 6 months but they only check my Liver. I dont know about The uk, but here in Germany they always Do blood Tests to check if everything is ok when you are Traking meds for a longer Period of time. Even my dermatologist did a bloodtest after i had to Take a med for 4 Weeks.

I'm already vegetarian, don't really eat eggs or margarine or butter or anything. I'm going to have the most bland diet if i have anything else out haha, but thanks for the advice!

I only ever get blood tests if they think there's something wrong, never as a precaution for meds or anything, its really good they do it in germany though.

it is true that it can cause high cholesteral but the thing i think everyone needs to understand is that every medication can cause side effects the thing is it is tested over a wide range of people and maybe only 2 people got it so it is a precaution. do not stop taking ur meds cause of high cholesteral reduce ur intake of meat and butters and margerines. i never have eaten much meat my cholesteral has always been too low infact so if taking my quetiapine is raising my levels it would be good. talk to ur dr about other ways t lower it and keep a monthly or so eye on it as long as it isnt too high u have nothing to worry about

Hi,
I just remembered learning from The Professor about cholesterol. He Said that there os good cholesterol and Bad cholesterol. The good cholesterol is very important for The Body to Funktion as it makes The cells Membrane More stable (language???). If you dont habe enouch good cholesterol your Cell Membranes arent as stable anymore. Your Body does actually Produce cholesterol for that reason.
I know People who get told by their dr that their cholesterol is wa too high, but they have good cholesterol. Sadly The dr doesnt Do a Test to differentiate.
