My mood goes back and foreward too quickly to be bipolar but i don't have the mania as such. Some of my moods last for hours sometimes days other times it changes withing minutes/hours. It's like a patch of a few weeks is generically bad with ups, downs, anger, depression, then it gets a bit better for a bit but with ups and downs.
I have the majority of the symptoms for BPD. but i can have times when i go back to normal and i can have times where i'm almost like a hyper kid (i'm 20) but it doesnt go as far as mania. It feels like BPD with a mild form of bipolar. I'm not impulsive in terms of shoplifting, drugs etc and the majority of the time i can control my self harm. I also do not have any of the typical reasons for BPD such as abuse, bad upbringing etc.
Please let me know your thoughts and experiences, i'd like to know some personal stories so i can understand it a bit better
everything will be ok in the end, if it's not ok then it's not the end.
a lot of the symptoms for bdp and bipolar can be similar, and i have known people diagnosed with both, and the medication i am on can also be used for bipolar, as i have traits of both (i have bpd) tbh, its just a bunch of labels, and as long as yu are getting the right treatment for your symptoms...i would leave the label making to the drs. if you are not getting the right treatment, then its worth talking to your dr/psych again.
When times get tough, the best we can do is remember there is better to come. If we can hold onto this hope, then hope will keep us free.
There is correlation between the two in a few ways but I doubt it can be comorbid. BPD consists of rapid mood swings which can change in an hour or so, Bipolar consists of phases of mania and depression that last for a few weeks or a few months.
Thank you for your replies. I really appreciate it.
One more question, i was prescribed the anti depressant sertraline, because the University doctor gave me a questionnaire, asked some questions and decided it was "exam stress" etc. It isn't, exam stress doesn't last almost 5 years. But i accepted it at the time because i was sad and that is the only side he saw. He didnt ask about anything else. I was wondering, should i take this, will it work in controlling everything? Will it make things worse with things like getting really angry etc. I have no idea what medication you would get prescribed if it was bipolar/BPD.
everything will be ok in the end, if it's not ok then it's not the end.
Dear Bella
as I read your description, I felt you are talking somehow about me, I was stuck on the intenet for thousands of hours trying to figure out what is wrong with me and what is it called
I had consulted several psychiatrists over years, and like you i started with sertraline,
I dont know a lot about BPD, but i think black and white thinking is a major diagnosis creteria
but about pibolar, it is devided into three (or even more) catagories, and from your descriptions It might be cyclothymia or rapid cycling what you are suffering from.
it is usually treated with AD with a mood stabilizer, and sometimes atypical antipsychotic, they are somehow effective, but I think psychotherapy is very essential too, unfortunetly I never had the chance to try it.
if you googled cyclothymia you can read more about the subject.
I think you should get back to the doc and tell him how you feel, if he didnt respond try talking to someone else, like a parent so you can get proffesional consulting.
hope you will get bettre
:)

I used to think you couldn't have both, but now my diagnosis is bipolar disorder with traits of borderline personality disorder. I'm treated with a mood stabiliser, antipsychotic and and antidepressant and about to start psychotherapy.
Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes but when you look back, everything is different…
you once called your brain a hard drive, well say hello to the virus.
You can have both but it's also important to not diagnose yourself.
If you don't agree with your GP about exam stress can you talk to another one?
I personally would start on the sertraline but monitor yourself and make sure you have a follow up appointment in say a month. Be prepared though most anti depressants take at least that if not longer to properly start working.

i've been diagnosed wit cyclothimia(something like that) which is on the bi polar sectrum or something. anndd unspecified personality disorder, most traits from bpd. So yeah can happen :P I also take sertraline and find it helpful in treating these things

Yeah you can have both. I had cyclothymia and BPD, then they removed the cyclothymia, but now thinking of labelling me with Bipolar II and BPD. So yeah, it is possible to have both.
