How to approach my friend about depression?
I know my friend is going through a pretty crappy time with her home life (I know because her brother has said about it recently) but she has never spoken to me or any other friends (as far as I'm aware) about it but I've noticed she's been acting differently and I knew there was something wrong but I left it. But now I just want her to know she's not alone and I understand and she can talk to me about it. How do I bring up the situation? We are meeting up next weekend and it's a good time to mention it but I don't want to bring it up and make her feel pressured, worse or make her sad in a day where she may be trying to forget about things and have a nice day out?
Do I mention to her about my issues with self harm and depression to help her feel less alone? (I know I can trust her). I really want to help her. |
Firstly, just to say: You sound like a really great friend, really caring and understanding.
It's difficult with depression and sometimes there isn't anything that people can say to help, but just saying to her what you've said here - that she's not alone, that you understand and that she can talk about it if she wants to, will be really helpful and reassuring. If you're unsure of how to bring it up, you could always try sending her a text the evening before, or even writing her a little letter or a card to give to her at the end of your day out. Mentioning your experience with self-harm and depression sounds fine if you feel comfortable with that, and I am sure she will be really glad to just know that she has a friend like you who cares so much. Look after yourself as well, I know it is difficult when a friend is struggling. x |
thankyou so much. That's a good idea, I may do that.
I just hope at the time I don't get too nervous and end up not mentioning it, I can always text her but I thought it might be better talking face to face. I shall do, thanks again. Hope you're having a nice day. X |
