Diagnosed with OCD
I had a pdoc appointment this morning and came away with the diagnosis of OCD and personality something and I can't remember the personality thing :crying: I'm scared how will I cope? I'm getting a letter through in the next few days explaining it all :crying:

hey, i remember how scared i was when i got diagnosed with ocd. it was really scary to have something "wrong" with me, but it was also kind of good to know that i wasn't going crazy (and you aren't either).
a really good resource for OCD information and treatment is the International OCD Foundation. the website is at www.ocfoundation.org the treatment that has proven to be most effective for ocd is Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) which is a submethod of cognitive behavioral therapy. it involves repeatedly facing the things that you fear, in small amounts, until your body and mind don't react, and then facing something a bit more difficult, and then a bit more difficult. it definitely is not pleasant, but it REALLY does work and not much else will. if you want more info, just send a pm. :) |
It is scary getting a diagnosis but it is important to remember it doesn't change who you are as a person. It is just there to give the doctors a better guideline on how to treat you.

I have to agree with Kat that nothing has changed but you now have a name for what you are struggling with.
The fact you now have a name does mean that you are one step closer to getting it all sorted and that is a big positive. I don't have OCD but when I was diagnosed I was like ahhhhh so I do kind of know how you feel but I would try and not stress to much. xox |
I have OCD too, just let me tell you... a diagnosis doesn't change anything, you're the same person you were yesterday, but your problems are now recognized and you can help yourself and get help better. :) There is no reason to be scared, if anything, you should feel relieved and happy. I hope things turn out to be OK, good luck with everything.

Like everyone has said, the diagnosis itself is nothing to be afraid of - it is basically a useful shorthand for your doctor to understand your symptoms and the appropriate treatment. In many respects, having a diagnosis can make coping easier, because you will be offered the support you need as a result.
If you are still concerned or have any questions once the letter comes through, you can always get some reassurance from your doctor. |
My care co-ordinator told me they are sure I have OCD, but my psych hasn't mentioned it yet.
It is scary getting diagnoses, I agree. I was devastated when I received my psychosis diagnosis at the age of 15, and then got told I actually have paranoid schizophrenia later on. However when I got my autism diagnosis, that was a relief as it got me understanding and access to support. Perhaps you could look at your OCD diagnosis that way - a path to understanding and support. |
