Or do you think people should be free to share material that helps them in some way. Also.. if these threads do help, or if they really dont help you, could you possible explain why a little bit? cheers m'dears. PS: there is no way im going to sit and listen to every recommended song or watch the video for that song, or read every book thats mentioned. to check for rule breakings :P |
can... meet worms.
i think they should go. i also think 90% of the stuff in creative corner needs to go. because i encourages people to wallow in their misery, which i don't see as productive. |

tea in mouth... meet laptop :( Also, I think they are unhelpful, all those threads about "songs with SI" etc, but, I'm also aware I am at a different stage of recovery than what I was when I joined; which was when I was listening to your evanscence/linkin park type music. Though I suppose that's different to asking for songs specifically about cutting, which I've never actually done, so I suppose I don't understand. Maybe it's for those who want to have something to relate to a bit. That was mostly unhelpful, sorry. |
*snig* i need more tea.

Oh noes..
bib.. meet aimees neck |
hang on, i can see where this thread is going to go, ish.
because i made one like it. that was locked. |
personally I have always found books on the topic of self-harm, mental health, etc. helpful... Esspecially ones where the person comes through it all and regains some degree of "normality" or "recovery" in their lives. It sort of helps when I'm feeling hopeless to know that others have gotten through things.
However, if/when I recomend any to others I am very careful not to recomend any that are overly graphic or that have what could be seen as "tip-sharing" in them |
maybe not.
it's gone. i swear i made one about the semi-autobiographical graphic stories in creative corner, where's that gone? the reason i bring it up, is if you're discussing book recommendations as well, you might as well lump these stories in too, because it's the same thing, you can just read them here. |
Yeah some of them do have really graphic triggering content but ARE WE BUBBLE WRAPPING OR ARE WE NOT?! IS THIS REAL LIFE OR NOT.
CONFUSED. Charlie, go to bed & stop causing trouble. |
hahahha, Aimee, charlie hasn't spoken about are we bubble wrapping or is it real life in this thread.
you go to bed & stop causing trouble. |
i would allow documentaries and books because they tend to be recovery orientated. but songs about SH, they're always so wallow-y and dare i say it, emo. they don't just normalise, they glamourise: look at my pain, it hurts so bad and don't i do it prettily. i will try and find examples to back this up.
but then it's not really my problem as i just avoid the threads with the tell-tale titles. edit: creative corner, wasn't there talk of changing the labels along the lines of whether you're after contructive criticism, or just want to pour out your guts? |

I understand why people like to share books/films/music about SI - but I do feel it just - without meaning to just copy Eirinn's opinion - that it allows people to wallow essentially, and creates a negative and damaging atmosphere. Quote:

There's a lot of wallowing going on.
Who's going to feel positive after listening to song after song about cutting then reading poems about cutting then reading books about cutting. Been there, done that, didn't help. It just reinforces the belief that your identity is a self harmer, when that's not true. |
But then, we've all been through that, I wonder if these opinions would have been the same five years ago.

What helps one person is going to trigger another. And apparently we err on the side of caution so these should go.
I find it quite odd, I don't understand it. But if people want to wallow in their misery then let them. As an aside, if you post in Creative Corner then you should expect someone to come along and give it some constructive criticism. Not be downright nasty, but constructive. Actually, this goes for reviews too. I want to be able to say something was crap, otherwise it's not really a review and recommendation board, it's a let's only be positive about books/films board. |
just to add, i don't necessarily want to stop people telling each other about this stuff on RYL. maybe you have to learn for yourself that it's not always dreadfully helpful.
