Soup-food or drink?

Basically life's little debates. Because I'm possibly having a cup-a-soup cream of asparagus in a moment.

Do you class soup as a food or a drink?

Basically my two arguments to this...

Food- Starter in restaurants.

Drink- Put into flasks and cups and basically drunk out of.

I'd say it's a food, because it's not a straight liquid.
Then again, some drinks aren't either.
Like tapioca drinks.
Hmm, I'd still say it's a food.

Rodolphus 19-10-2009 09:36 PM

Food.

Lucius. 19-10-2009 09:37 PM

Food. It's designed to fill you up and drinks generally don't do that.

Field Of Paper Flowers 19-10-2009 09:39 PM

It's food.

I had a cup a soup earlier, I forgot how rank they are!

BlueDragon91 19-10-2009 09:41 PM

It's a food. and i hate cup a soup!

I had chicken and sweetcorn. I did it really thin so it was rank at first but I have to correct myself, it tasted okay after a while!

I'll probably have another tomorrow and do it a bit thicker. =)

If it's in a bowl, it's food. If it's in a cup, it's drink.

It occupies the nether-region between food and drink and thus, along with stew and custard, should never ever be ingested.

Yoghurt is excluded from this category for being yummy.

This is what I thought too.
It's years since I had a cup a soup, I like them :)

If you put scotch broth in a mug though I'd think of it as food. Because of the chunks. Mmm. I've made it sound appealing.

It's a liquidy food. Done.

Tapioca drinks?
I didn't know there was such a thing.
You'd have to chew it surely.

forever_lost 19-10-2009 11:20 PM

I think it's a food because it can count as a meal.
For example, if you say "I had soup for lunch."
no problem.
If you say "I had milk for lunch."
That's not really normal...

And most soups you have to chew or move around in your mouth somewhat before swallowing, so you're technically eating it?

Food food food
(but I always buy fresh stuff or make my own, so it tends to be thicker than cup-a-soup or canned stuff)

Zedebee 20-10-2009 09:26 AM

Food for me. I'm awkward and can't drink it. Needs to have a nice bread roll with it.

Casper_Fading 20-10-2009 09:42 AM

Food *nods* I like chunky chicken and corn soup! Actually... that's the ONLY soup I like :P And I buy it in a can and eat it with a yummy bread roll... nom nom nom

__T 20-10-2009 09:58 AM

Food if it's a proper soup, nice & chunky

silent 20-10-2009 10:02 AM

Food definitely! Needs a bread roll and a spoon!

Field Of Paper Flowers 20-10-2009 11:59 AM

I just thought, Bovril is a beef drink isn't it? That's different from cup a soup isn't it?
