Self-injury awareness day! =)

So SIAD is on March 1st. So what is everyone going to do to help spread awareness? I personally am going to wear orange and try and be strong enough to show my scars all day without be ashamed. Any other suggestions?

I made a shirt that says "Self Injury Awareness Day" on the front and "Break the Silence" on the back with an orange ribbon..

Chaos 27-02-2009 02:04 PM

It's my birthday. I'm also working all day.

So i'm just opting for the orange bracelet at work.

rockaroni 27-02-2009 02:31 PM

I put some posters up around the SU. I'm doing tours of the uni tomorrow, and will be wearing my orange bracelet then, as well as Sunday.

shadow-light 27-02-2009 02:34 PM

I've postered all the bus stops in the main 2 streets of aberdeen last night..
doing he uni today...
doing torry and cove on Saturday (and rosemount and the supermarkets if can)
and holding an information stall where selling orange ribbons (profit goign to charity) on sunday at the uni halls

Field Of Paper Flowers 27-02-2009 02:34 PM

I was thinking of doing something at uni, but it's too late now. =(

I haven't got anything orange to wear, except my self injury awareness bracelet. (Y)

ShyGirlEiana 27-02-2009 05:09 PM

rustedchains and I are doing some stuff at our school today! (Since obviously, there's no school on Sunday).

She's pretty much been the brains behind it all =) She designed some excellent posters to put up around campus, flyers that we will have on a table near the cafeteria for people to pick up, and the best part -- t-shirts for us! They all have the same slogan: "Step up. Reach out. There's hope." I like it =)

I contributed my talents in putting together ribbons (which we're also going to have on the table by the cafeteria for people to take) and putting the iron-on transfers on the t-shirts =P

I am currently wearing bright orange pants, my t-shirt, an orange ribbon, an orange bandanna, and orange ribbons in my hair. Hehe...it's quite fun.

We're going to wear our t-shirts to church on Sunday too, and see if we can hand out some ribbons and flyers there. Yay SIAD =D

iiiii

Don't really know much about that day. Do we just like... talk to people about SI or something? I'm all for telling people about it, but I just wanted to make sure that was the point.

Spork. 27-02-2009 05:43 PM

I'm doing absolutely nothing for it =]

its just raising awareness, so whatever you feel comfortable with, some will just wear orange without an explanation and some people have gone and put up posters all over town are selling ribbons and such. its just however you feel comfortable promoting awareness for SI =] x

jellytot 27-02-2009 06:41 PM

I gona wear my orange top , ribbons round my wrist ! a pin ribbon ,

ShyGirlEiana 27-02-2009 07:38 PM

=( I've walked past our table near the cafeteria a couple of times since this morning...hardly any of the flyers or ribbons are gone. =(

...and I'm starting to feel really quite self-conscious in all of my bright orange. *sigh* Maybe things will start going better once class is over?

Miss-Dramatic 27-02-2009 08:38 PM

I'll be keeping an eye out for your posters :p What streets did you do? Union st / belmont street maybe?
If you do the rosemount area.. make sure you put one near me so I can spot it easily!

cryingcrimson 27-02-2009 10:23 PM

Awesome ideas guys!! Very creative!! =D It's time the silence is broken about SI...even if it's one day at a time. :)

ShyGirlEiana 27-02-2009 10:32 PM

So...rustedchains and I could only have the flyers and ribbons on the table until 2:00 this afternoon...I'm not sure how many flyers people took - not too many, unfortunately - but we only got rid of ten ribbons out of about 120. It's better than nothing, but I'm still kind of discouraged. =(

At the same time, it's made me determined to figure out what more I can do - if there's anything I can do in the next couple of days, and for sure what can be improved for next year!!

Wow you really have been busy.
I plan on going into town tomorrow so I'll keep a look out for your posters on Union Street =]

Konstantine 27-02-2009 11:44 PM

No one is going to see me on sunday, but i'm wearing orange nailvarnish anyway.

shadow-light 28-02-2009 12:35 AM

how much should I sell ribbons for do people think?

I'm so far thinking:

safety pinned ribbons; 30p
velcroed ribbons; 20p
cakes (with icing ribbons on); 30p

not sure I will sell any at more than that...

rustedchains 28-02-2009 12:53 AM

Yeah we didn't get to do much. A professor did ask me about all the orange... it was amusing because Eiana was in the section before me. "You're the second person I've seen in orange today!" I told him. Meh. We have over 100 extra fliers. They won't let us go door to door or shove them under doors. =( Next year though... you can bet we are going to do something more.

shadow-light 28-02-2009 01:00 AM

hmm... not sure what you can do with leaf over fliers...

could use them as posters I guess?

Sooty 28-02-2009 04:10 PM

Well done everyone on their awareness efforts. I got together with the deputy head teacher at my school and put together a display in a quiet place in the school where people can stop and read if they wish. Here's the display:

shadow-light 28-02-2009 04:37 PM

that's brilliant. how long's it gtting left up for?

by the way... does anyone know the correct ratio of icing sugar to water for icing? I want to ice these cakes and draw ribbons on them (got some orange writting icing)

bexidecimal 28-02-2009 04:43 PM

m not sure there is much i can do to be honest, i bought some beads today but couldnt find any orange ones.. so i bought some white ones with orange spots =] and ill make a braclet later.. i wanna do something more.. i mean its tomorrow but like we can do stuff on other days right? we should have like a huge campaign. get some RYLers together and organise some stuff x

I think that's a good idea... could need a lot of organising though...

you could do something for mental health action week, that's not till the 14th(?) of april, the theme this year is fear/anxiety but I'm sure as long as it's mental health related it would fit

bexidecimal 28-02-2009 04:48 PM

i anna make friendship bracelets.. with white and orange thread and give them to people as a kind of symbol of "your not alone" if you know what i mean.. good idea? bad idea?

i forgot how to make friendship bracelets..

and shadow =] i know it could take alot of organising, even if its for next year =] im not sure what i could do for the metal health action week... i shall get thinking =] x

shadow-light 28-02-2009 04:50 PM

Oo I like that idea.

do you mean the sort of weaving type bracelets? I can't rememebr how to make them either :/ need to enlist a 7 year old lol

bexidecimal 28-02-2009 04:52 PM

*hunts for a 7 year old* i asked my mum.. she forgot too.. anyone else know? xD and i just edited my post about the friendship bracelets to add stuff to it xD 3 much love all =] x

shadow-light 28-02-2009 04:54 PM

http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Friendship-Bracelet

bexidecimal 28-02-2009 04:56 PM

wikkihow <3 thankyou =]

bexidecimal 28-02-2009 05:06 PM

so whos up for it? i know we have posters and things but surely there are other bigger things we can do to? actually holding i dont know like a "stall" in london or the other cities and handing out leaflets, selling ribbons and bracelets, promorting the day, because i had never heard of this day before i came to this site and i only came a few months ago..

i will make these bracelets soon, they wont be for tomorrow unfortunately but i will still make them because i think it is a nice idea =] x

shadow-light 28-02-2009 06:07 PM

I put in an application to the uni yesterday to for a society (mental health awareness - thougt it more likely to be passed if I did an umbrella society rather than a self-harm one) so next year I'm hopefully going to be able to do something BIG.

I guess the easiest way to organise something on here would be via a meet?

bexidecimal 28-02-2009 06:14 PM

yeah probably.. but would we need permission to like hand out flyers and things like that in town and such?

good luck <3 =]

shadow-light 28-02-2009 06:32 PM

well I got permission to put up posters for SIAD from the council... but not sure if others did

bexidecimal 28-02-2009 06:35 PM

can we do another a, maybe a few months from now and call it something else *insert call name here* and have a day then, promote RYL and awareness of SI and ED's and such?

Shadowsaurus 28-02-2009 07:19 PM

I'm going to an RYL meet (= even though, technically, I should be doing college work hahaha

Kestrel 28-02-2009 08:39 PM

Well... the only place i'll be going tomorrow is to my nans and back in my car.... so Monday I'm gonna look like I've been tango'd xD

bexidecimal 28-02-2009 09:09 PM

yey =D tango hee hee

shadow-light 28-02-2009 09:48 PM

I'd like some opinions...

tomorrow I have a stall, selling ribbons giving out leaflets, etc... now... should I or should I not wear short sleeves? I mean I have been wearing short sleeves alot recently, the way I see it if someone sees someone sees... meh.... but... I don't want to purposely draw attention to it...

bexidecimal 28-02-2009 09:50 PM

i think you should, be proud and let them know your not just doing it for the "attention" or whatever that you really do know what your talkng about, you get what i mean?

shadow-light 28-02-2009 10:04 PM

I'm just concerned that it will give off the wrong impression...

bexidecimal 28-02-2009 10:09 PM

i dont think so.. i mean the whole point of tomorrow is to promote the awareness of self harm and to try and give those that feel alone the support and re-asurrance they need, i think they will feel more comfortable knowing that there seeking help were people have been through it and know about it rather than someone who is on the outside looking in if you know what i mean. obviously thats my opinion and if your not comfortable showing your scars then dont hun =] your choice =] x
