Is it just me or is this slightly racist?

One of my flat mates is Asian, and generally makes a big point of telling you he's Asian. I mean, being proud of it is one thing, but he keeps making me out to be lesser because I'm white.
I mean...it's pretty trivial things for example, we only have 1 key to a particular door in the house, which never gets closed anyway, but he said "I'll look after it because I'm Asian", or when i was cooking a curry, he went "good luck, it won't be ASIAN style".
It's a freakin' Indian curry! My grandma was brought up in Asia and I've been brought up on spicey foods since I was little. I can cook a god damn curry, it's not exactally my first time.
After telling him this he just looked at me and went "Yeah right" and walked off.

I'm not hugely fond of this fellow.

Can I meet him?
I'm never racist.
We'll just have a little chat

He sounds like a ****.
I'd say throw your curry on him, but it'd be a waste of a good curry.

What's most insulting is he was born and raised around Leeds.

He got me to go and fetch him some cigarettes last night because he had SO much unpacking to do. And he got me to go and fetch him a bleedin' kebab...he had just recovered from an asthma attack in all fairness though. And just, stupid things like that, I seem to be making a lot of little trips for himand getting nothing in return. It usually starts off with "Richard...Richard...RICHARD, can you do me a favour...?"

I don't really want to fall out with him, I'm going to have to live with him for the next year. I'm just hoping that when my friends come over he'll grow up a little.

Dicky!

Narcissism 02-10-2008 11:59 PM

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.
Let me meet him.

Casper_Fading 03-10-2008 12:01 AM

actually lol'd.
that's how ridiculous that is.

Dicky T 03-10-2008 12:26 AM

Oh, I might mention that he's into body building, owns several ornimental samuri swords and knives, and apparently was into cage fighting.

I don't believe the last one for a second. He once told me how his Dad just goes out and "kills people" if they piss him off enough.
I've met his Dad, and I'll tell you, he doesn't. He's your typical Dad.

He also has quite a nice sound system and spent a long time tell me about it. Me, the guy doing the third year of an Audio Recording Technology degree.

Potatos 03-10-2008 12:36 AM

but guess how much it cost....go on..

The One Who 03-10-2008 09:12 AM

You could start saying the same things but change Asian to European. Asia is a big place and there's no one culture or language or way of doing things. He might start to realise how stupid he sounds. Or kindly point out to him that he was born and raised in Britain, has probably never been to "Asia" in his life and even if he has will have no real understanding of life in that part of the world.

Heidi Tiger 03-10-2008 10:10 AM

This reminds me of my 8 year old half spanish cousin. Who whenever he's over here it's "SPain is the best, better than England". "This milk isn't as nice as Spanish milk". He also insists that he is more spanish than english, despite the fact he is 50/50. However as he is 8, it's quite amusing, your flatmates needs to grow up!

lungs locked lips locked 03-10-2008 10:15 AM

What a pleb.

Chaos 03-10-2008 10:24 AM

next time you have too get him a kebab, spit in it.

Usually helps me lol

Douglass 03-10-2008 10:40 AM

next time he says something like 'Asian style' just exactly what part of Asia he is referring to as different parts of Asia has different styles.

Absi 03-10-2008 10:56 AM

What a dick. end of.

bexie 03-10-2008 11:07 AM

mupet...
he needs to grow up.

sherlock holmes 03-10-2008 11:33 AM

He'll no doubt run into other people who wont be as nice with what he's saying, and he'll have to grow up very quickly.

Dicky T 03-10-2008 11:38 AM

He's 19, I'm not sure why he hasn't grown up already.

He was playing bangra at full blast at half 10 this morning.
I ****ing HATE bangra.

Some serious words need to be shed, I'll have a word with my other flat mate and see what he thinks - who oddly enough, is part Asian.

Jetes 03-10-2008 11:44 AM

Sounds to me like this guy isn't exactly secure in who he is as a person, so he overemphasises by grasping onto his ethnicity like some kind of security blanket and thus comes off as a total idiot.

Heidi Tiger 03-10-2008 11:51 AM

Oh how tempted I would be to let him hear of the stereotyping I've heard some people say about penis sizes relating to ethnicity! However that obviously would be a bad, bad, racist thing to do.
But if he focuses so much on the positive stereotypes associated with his ethnicity, perhaps he should be prepared to accept that the negative ones may also be true.

Bleeding Angel 03-10-2008 12:32 PM

i guess you cant choose your flatmates, but he does sound annoying

OutOfTheWoods11 03-10-2008 01:12 PM

Just sik Danzorz on him
Armed with powerisers :-p

Dicky T 03-10-2008 03:04 PM

Ok, but this one takes the biscuit:

Him: "Oooh, my stomach"
Me: "Not good, what have you been eating"
Him: "Beans"
Me: "Ahh well..."
Him: "Asian style".

What? Erh, I'm actually about to goto the LIBRARY just to avoid him.

Dicky!

Duffer44 03-10-2008 03:15 PM

next time he has a kebab let him know it's greek style and will never be asain style. also tell him to get a life and grow up (or just punch him)

Absi 03-10-2008 03:39 PM

HAHAHAHA!!!! Asian style beans. Dicky do you want me to eat him asian style?

Coppelia 03-10-2008 03:40 PM

Because it's well known that Asian people are incredible at not losing keys?
It's very similar to the way I say "No, I'll look after this object that will rarely be used because I'm Irish" every now and again.

I don't know. This lad just seems odd.
Like you said, there's nothing wrong with being proud of your heritage, he just seems to be taking the piss a bit.

Zedebee 04-10-2008 02:04 PM

As a fellow Asian I know I'd like to poke him with a fork. Or five. Hard.
I don't think it's racism. I think he's just a shithead.

Lou Lou 04-10-2008 02:15 PM

psh! He is clearly insecure and is trying to big himself up, trying to make everyone else out as a lesser being.

I went to school with a girl was Nigerian who would always go on and on about her hertiage and how wonderful Nigeria was and how this-that-or-the-other would be so much better in Nigeria. They could have all been fair points except she was born and raised in London as had both her parents lol.

Just ignore him, he'll start to feel like a ****

[pretty on the inside] 04-10-2008 02:42 PM

If he asks you for a favour, just tell him you're busy.. He can't expect you to run around after him all the time!

Mrs Sam 04-10-2008 02:48 PM

or just say

"I'm sorry i can't do that for you i'm english"

Then walk away. Maybe he'll realise how annoying it is.

Porcelain Child 04-10-2008 02:54 PM

Pfftt i would of strangled him by now...

N.Bluth 04-10-2008 03:29 PM

He's clearly not got much about himself has he? Either that or no-one has ever explained that personality is not the ability to constantly refer to you race or culture. He's obviously a prick. One of my male friends is Asian and a boxer, I'll ask him to pop round and bang him out "Asian style" if you like?

Dicky T 04-10-2008 04:54 PM

Well, after spending a little more time with the lad, I've discovered that he just hasn't grown up much. I think he was a spoilt brat at home, so he thinks he knows everything.
He tried to convince me that a wolf isn't a dog today. When i told him it really is, just a wild one he went "Right ok, so a fox, is that a dog?!".

It really did take a lot of explaining to tell him that not all dogs are domestic. There is a diffence due to breeding, but a labrador could just as easy maul you if it chose to do so.

In conclusion, he just needs to grow up a bit, and I think living with me and Jason who are both in a our early 20's will help him.
Other than that, albeit very irritating, he's not a bad guy...I think.
