One of my flat mates is Asian, and generally makes a big point of telling you he's Asian. I mean, being proud of it is one thing, but he keeps making me out to be lesser because I'm white.
I mean...it's pretty trivial things for example, we only have 1 key to a particular door in the house, which never gets closed anyway, but he said "I'll look after it because I'm Asian", or when i was cooking a curry, he went "good luck, it won't be ASIAN style".
It's a freakin' Indian curry! My grandma was brought up in Asia and I've been brought up on spicey foods since I was little. I can cook a god damn curry, it's not exactally my first time.
After telling him this he just looked at me and went "Yeah right" and walked off.
What's most insulting is he was born and raised around Leeds.
He got me to go and fetch him some cigarettes last night because he had SO much unpacking to do. And he got me to go and fetch him a bleedin' kebab...he had just recovered from an asthma attack in all fairness though. And just, stupid things like that, I seem to be making a lot of little trips for himand getting nothing in return. It usually starts off with "Richard...Richard...RICHARD, can you do me a favour...?"
I don't really want to fall out with him, I'm going to have to live with him for the next year. I'm just hoping that when my friends come over he'll grow up a little.
Oh, I might mention that he's into body building, owns several ornimental samuri swords and knives, and apparently was into cage fighting.
I don't believe the last one for a second. He once told me how his Dad just goes out and "kills people" if they piss him off enough.
I've met his Dad, and I'll tell you, he doesn't. He's your typical Dad.
He also has quite a nice sound system and spent a long time tell me about it. Me, the guy doing the third year of an Audio Recording Technology degree.
You could start saying the same things but change Asian to European. Asia is a big place and there's no one culture or language or way of doing things. He might start to realise how stupid he sounds. Or kindly point out to him that he was born and raised in Britain, has probably never been to "Asia" in his life and even if he has will have no real understanding of life in that part of the world.
This reminds me of my 8 year old half spanish cousin. Who whenever he's over here it's "SPain is the best, better than England". "This milk isn't as nice as Spanish milk". He also insists that he is more spanish than english, despite the fact he is 50/50. However as he is 8, it's quite amusing, your flatmates needs to grow up!
next time he says something like 'Asian style' just exactly what part of Asia he is referring to as different parts of Asia has different styles.
Let me be the one you call
If you jump i'll break your fall
Lift you up and fly away with you into the night
If you need to fall apart
I can mend a broken heart
If you need to crash then crash and burn YOU'RE NOT ALONE
Sounds to me like this guy isn't exactly secure in who he is as a person, so he overemphasises by grasping onto his ethnicity like some kind of security blanket and thus comes off as a total idiot.
Oh how tempted I would be to let him hear of the stereotyping I've heard some people say about penis sizes relating to ethnicity! However that obviously would be a bad, bad, racist thing to do.
But if he focuses so much on the positive stereotypes associated with his ethnicity, perhaps he should be prepared to accept that the negative ones may also be true.
