Eurovision!

So its that time of the year again, and this year its a full-week extravaganza., with two semi-finals on Tuesday and Thursday and then the big final on Saturday.

I know that for most people Eurovision is just tuning in for Terry Wogans musings while mocking all the outfits, but I've really got into it this year (yes I have no life). Just wondered if anyone else was into it and had some opinions on who will win it.

I'd say Russia have the best chance. I'm a huge Dima Bilan fan thanks to his success at the contest in 2006, and think that he has a lot of fans in the east that will vote for him. However, my favourite song and performance is a tough call. A week ago I would have said my favourites were Iceland, but Ukraine's been growing on me a lot, and Sweden is pretty good. Loved Switzerland from the minute I heard it. Oh, and of course I'm supporting Belarus again - I mean, Ruslan is just a replica of last years best entrant, Dima Koldun.

Anyway, I ramble. If anyone wants to know anything about the contest this year, feel free to ask. Just wondering about people's opinion and to spread some eurovision awareness, hehe.

Tears and Rain 18-05-2008 06:22 PM

When is it?
I'll probably watch with my takeaway and alcohol as with every year if i'm in (Y)
No idea who's on it.
Don't give a toss.
Just watch for the giggles.

Puppet Strings 18-05-2008 06:29 PM

Eurovision's rubbish TV, but good rubbish.
Terry Wogan is the best bit, alongside trashy food, drink and random bits of hilarity throughout the programme.
Oh, it's rubbish, but oh so enjoyable.
I don't care where we come, who's in it, and who wins. Haha.
xx

Getting_There_Monkey 18-05-2008 06:33 PM

I like watching it on the big night but if its on a saturday im going to miss it this year for years i aint missed it once now work will get in the way =[

Zedebee 18-05-2008 06:36 PM

I've watched it since I was a kid, despite the trashyness and the fixed results and all that garb. It's one tradition of mine that I've kept, something from childhood that's not changed. Yup
I do love Terry =)

TheCon 18-05-2008 06:54 PM

Bloody well LOVE it. Cannot wait for Saturday.
I think it's time to plan a Eurovision party!

Crumple... 18-05-2008 07:37 PM

Eurovision is the worst thing to happen to the world since.. Hitler.
I'm just pissed because it ****s up regular TV, and that being Doctor Who.

Puppet Strings 18-05-2008 07:39 PM

Yeah, it's a shame it mucks up Doctor Who. :(

Narcissism 18-05-2008 07:40 PM

Isn't Terry Wogan banned from certain european countries because of some of the things he's said?
Hah.

TheCon 18-05-2008 07:40 PM

^ LOL! Serioussss?!
He's such a legend.

Sunshine_blues 18-05-2008 07:42 PM

Yeah, he upset the Danish a few years ago I think. He didnt realise that his popularity as a commentator meant that people across europe tune into the BBC broadcast. He insulted the Danish presenters or summit like that, and had to apologise. Don't think he's banned from the country though.

Puppet Strings 18-05-2008 07:42 PM

Wikipedia says that he jokes that he is now banned from visiting Denmark, due to some of his comments over the years.

xx

lungs locked lips locked 18-05-2008 09:20 PM

I love eurovision. I like scoring and insulting all of the bands every year.
Plus, Im always waiting eagerly for the next Lordi-style random entry =] that was an amusingly good year.

I may sit down with a drink from every country and enjoy. sounds much better than usual.

lydia. 18-05-2008 09:26 PM

The Irish entry is embarrassing really.

LeBubble 18-05-2008 09:32 PM

I always watch it. I'm having some friends round so we can all laugh at it and do the jokey scorecards you can get off the BBC website.

Crumple... 18-05-2008 09:46 PM

Who is the British entry?

x-dying-inside-x 18-05-2008 10:15 PM

the bin man from x factor.
i dont really like eurovision but if its on i might watch it.

Sunshine_blues 18-05-2008 11:41 PM

most likely. I watched the rehersal for it, and he has a good voice, but they've gone really overboard with the pyro's - you cant even see him! (maybe that was the idea - the man really cant dance)

Pretty good summary :-D

Sunshine_blues 23-05-2008 01:59 AM

So the semi-finals have taken place, and the finalists have all been chosen. I guess over-all I'm happy with the songs that got through. I had 7 main favourites, and 4 of them got through. I'm very disappointed for Belarus :( And I still think Switzerland had a great song, even if his vocals were a bit off. Andorra should have qualified. But the 4 (Iceland, Sweden, Russia, and Ukraine) that did go through will have my full support Saturday night. I think I'll also be rooting for Finland and Israel. (I'll be living in Finland next year, so it would be awesome if they won again). France is good too.

Oh, and for all those that just like to watch for a laugh, there are still some joke entries that got through and some good acts with very strange outfits, so plenty to mock. Should be a good show.

nowhereman 23-05-2008 02:46 AM

I forgot it was on tonight. Dustin didn't get through anyway (Ireland's act) so that's less to mock, although his song is actually sounding ok compared to some of the others and that's saying a lot!

Liar. 23-05-2008 06:21 AM

eurovision this year is sooo bad!
all of the songs are awful, Romainia might have had a chance, if they had chosen someone who could sing.
Greece have a chance, at least their song makes sence.
Personally i have to give my vote to Ireland for the comedy aspect, although theyre not going to win when there song makes fun of the contest itself.

I wish my country did Eurovision....but, were not european..
meh.

over and out 23-05-2008 06:24 AM

bee how did you know new zealand wasnt in europe :P

i love watching eurovision on the extra thing where you got the lyrics cos i can sing in foreign then and have no idea what they are saying :P

BarrelO'Crazy 23-05-2008 02:52 PM

It's a secret shame but i do love watching eurovision.
The music is always terrible but thats not the point.
Its such a laugh especially the wooden presenters they always seem to have.

Field Of Paper Flowers 23-05-2008 02:55 PM

I hate Eurovision but when I'm at my boyfriends tomorrow I'm gunna watch it with him. It'll be a giggle. ;)

Puppet Strings 23-05-2008 02:57 PM

Oh yeah, who can forget the crappy presenters they always have?!

Ah, Eurovision is such fun.

Field Of Paper Flowers 23-05-2008 06:05 PM

blue_kk 24-05-2008 01:33 PM

i hope andy can do it i liked him in x factor
hope we at least get more than 0 points lol

Crumple... 24-05-2008 06:34 PM

It isn't on till 8! They could've put Doctor Who on before it, then I'd do anything before that and messed about with the TV schedule earlier in the day. ****ing BBC idiots.

The One Who 24-05-2008 07:10 PM

I agree. What is there on before Eurovision that means Doctor Who has to get taken off? They could have easily not shown The Weakest Link, or any of the other rubbish filler programmes. Putting Doctor Who on before Eurovision would probably have got the BBC more viewers too.

Anyway, can't wait for Eurovision. Always a god laugh. The tin man from last year was robbed.

That's what I was thinking.

Gahh :(

Crumple... 24-05-2008 08:27 PM

Why can no one in Eurovision EVER SING WELL?!
I hate Eurovision, it's all just about politics and 'beautiful' women. See which act has the fanciest pyrotechnics. Which one looks the best. Well.. not best, it's all sh-t but you get me.

Stellata 24-05-2008 08:31 PM

Nil pwoins/ or however you spell it. :P

I won't be watching it, but it seems like it's not changed much since the late 70s/80s. lol.

Crumple... 24-05-2008 08:42 PM

See, even with an act that is JUST old men, they have to have some stretchy woman in a red dress wriggle around and lift up her legs like some cheap whore.

Yes, this thread will be filled with my rants.
No, I don't know why I'm watching it :/

Crumple... 24-05-2008 08:45 PM

She's so ORANGE.
O_O
Did she just sing "I would give my arm for love"
I'm sorry.. what?

The One Who 24-05-2008 08:46 PM

Eurovision Barbie!

Some of these have been dire.

Kame 24-05-2008 08:48 PM

This thread made me turn on the TV, which I was determined not to because Casualty wasn't on. Damn you >.< (But I know this is gunna be worth the laughs, it always is.)

The One Who 24-05-2008 08:51 PM

I like the little bits between the songs.

Kame 24-05-2008 08:52 PM

Damnit =( I like the snide comments, that and the outfits make it funny.

Well at one point he did say something about three gyrating eejits. But I agree, some of the comments aren't as good as they could be.

Kame 24-05-2008 08:55 PM

Loud irritating hosts =|

Psiren 24-05-2008 08:58 PM

Eurovision is always terrible.
I only watch it for Wogan.
And even he's not on form this year :(
