Indie Music

If I'm into Indie style music what would you recommend? I'm bored of what is currently on my Ipod.

I tend to go for Single songs but I want a new Album.

Indie is now dead.

Real Indie I suppose is The Smiths.
Razorlight are not indie. Bands like them are not indie.

Ash* 14-02-2008 10:54 PM

When you say "indie" what sort of indie do you want?
NME style Indie,or real, GOOD, original indie?
British, American?
Not at all bothered?

Ummm, personally? I'd go for stuff like The Smith, New Order maybe? The Shins possibly? Sonic Youth (<3).
Totally depends on what you think indie is?

I like the Cribs, a lot of their stuff is pretty good.
Apart from that I'm more into obscure bands than the modern Indie bands.

J.K 14-02-2008 11:03 PM

I'd say the Smiths.
They're really brilliant.

MrsNutkin 14-02-2008 11:19 PM

I dunno what you call it at all really. It's sort of easy going with a beat certainly not too heavy.

Ami 15-02-2008 07:52 PM

THE FEELING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!

Best Indie band in the world, new album out on monday

linder surprise 16-02-2008 01:23 AM

oh god.
the feeling are not indie by a million million miles.

MrsNutkin 16-02-2008 07:44 AM

Maybe the music I want isn't Indie at all then. I listen to all sorts just after new stuff really. I'll have a look in a shop I think. Morrisey is pretty good though :)

Puppet Strings 16-02-2008 11:55 AM

The Feeling?!

Wow, I'm surprised that anyone can class that in any genre but pop, but there we go.

Genres are often funny things, and tend to vary. So perhaps try out some of the bands in this thread, and others you hear talk of, and see what you like. Y'know, myspace & youtube are useful when it comes to that sort of thing. x

Ami 16-02-2008 12:10 PM

yeah ano morrissey isnt new indie. i was just syaing a general fact.. followed by bands i liked

Jukebox 16-02-2008 12:49 PM

The Feeling? They're commercial bollocks just like Razorlight, Keane, Coldplay.

mikey 16-02-2008 02:14 PM

Jeez, people! Syrup is just asking for you to recommend some music, which has a vaguely 'indie' sound. Who the hell cares whether it's new indie or old or sounds a bit too rocky or poppy or whatever to be technically classed as indie?! This is so silly! Music doesn't fit into nice slots like that.

UnhealthyGlow 16-02-2008 06:23 PM

lol ^^

try grindie!

Aphelion 16-02-2008 06:27 PM

Anything starting with 'The' basically.
Personally I'd like to see this indie trend to die, people get very hostile and elitist about it.

Queen Crabbit 16-02-2008 06:33 PM

You may like "The Size of a Cow" by "The Wonder Stuff".

Sounds like the kind of thing you described. Haven't listened to any of their other stuff, so can't give an opinion on it.

I won't even try to put it in a Genre because I'll get shouted at if I get it wrong.

Ashami 17-02-2008 12:43 AM

What gets me is people get so offended by other peoples tastes.

Why? What does it matter to anyone here what I like?

chasing bliss 17-02-2008 06:45 AM

well, i applaud your bravery (honestly) for using the word indie in a forum. it will, without fail, attract people who like to scan lists of bands so they can say "omfg not indie you stupid poser." just the truth. not your fault.

i don't know exactly what you're after so i won't try, but if you spend enough time on last.fm you will most definitely find some good stuff.

MrsNutkin 17-02-2008 02:32 PM

I honestly wasn't out to spark some sort of riot.

Ami 17-02-2008 07:24 PM

i know.

just try out different bands and see what you like xx

devoured_elysium 22-02-2008 06:15 PM

nowhere near indie i personally i hate the stuff but umm joshua radin is amazing, especially winter, from the garden state soundtrack and used by scrubs in 314 my screw up. its a beautiful song i love it, the lyrics are beautiful as is his voice and the guitar,
andy mckee just acoustic guitar, horribly horribly amazing guitarist, mellow relaxing, awesome,
dream theatre, progressive metal but oh sweet crap they're amazing, in every single way.
umm lot55 a small band from where i live norwich are fairly good.
i cant think of any others but give these a try, they're all amazing and awesomeness in a big jar not very "indie" but hey good is good sod the genre it fits into ^^
hope you likes some of them
Jim x

moth 23-02-2008 12:26 AM

love is all are a really cute band.
you sound listen to their song "make out, fall out, make up"
SO adorable.

mmmMinty... 23-02-2008 11:42 PM

Seriously, how can people get so elitist about music and it's 'genres'?
I'd say have a look around and see what you like, try myspace and youtube etc and you're bound to find something
x

Throwing muses is and older indie rock/alt. band
The lead singer has started a new indie rock/alt band called 50 Foot Wave. You can download some of their music for free under a creative commons license if you want to check it out first.

their website is www.throwingmusic.com

a couple of my favorite new bands are Fair to Midland and I have just recently discovered Tegan & Sara. They aren't really indie, but it might be worth checking into if you are looking for something new.

Good luck with your hunt!

Ohh... I almost forgot, Ingrid Michaelson. She is really new also. I just heard her last week on a morning talk show and went to her web site and bought her new cd,... it was that awesome!
