Distractions

Sometimes it can be hard to distract yourself from Bulimia, and the urges, and not all suggestions will work, so experiment and find the ones that work for you. The main objective is to keep yourself busy which will help to take your mind off things.

Listen to music. This can help to drown out all the thoughts buzzing around your head, and music is a good way to express how you feel. Make yourself a "happy songs" or "dancy songs" playlist. Not only will this keep you busy but it will give you something to listen to in the future, and will lift your mood better than more negative music.

Play games, whether on a games console, your computer, or online. This is good for taking your mind off your urges and help you to focus on something else - and hey, you may complete the game in no time!

Write down your thoughts in a journal or diary, or just on a piece of paper, then try and change them into something positive. For example, you might be thinking "I am a horrible person", but change your focus. Challenge the thoughts with something like " I am not a horrible person, I am a kind person and do my best for other people... etc." You can then refer to them another day and read how you were feeling, or throw it away, which can be therapeutic as you are symbolicly throwing the bad thoughts away.

Do puzzles e.g. crosswords, word search, sudoku (check the sudoku of the day). It keeps your brain busy and in no time you’ll be distracted.

Talk to someone about how your feeling (if you don’t mind talking about it) it could help you to realise that you need to change things so you can be happier, or even just give you some more support from friends and family.

Whatever you do, be gentle with yourself and do kind things, things that are going to help you feel better within yourself, even if you don't feel like it. Maybe just wearing some nice clothes, a nice purfume, or seeing some friends might lift your mood.
