Dr wants to switch me to Topiramax for Borderline Personality

is anyone here taking Topiramax?

i am currently taking Sodium Valporate (Epilim) for BPD (Borderline Personality) mood swings and it is working better than other things i have taken like Olanzapine.

thing is i am very overweight. i am seeing an endocrinologist for PCOS (Polycystic Ovaries) and the endo Dr suggested i talk to my CPN about switching to Topiramax because Topiramax doesnt cause weight gain.

can anyone who is taking Topiramax tell me what the side effects are? i also have eating issues- i binge all the time and occasionally take laxatives.

Do you mean Topamax?

Topiramax: (Topiramate (Topiramax®))
Never been on it, but I know in other forums I have browsed in the past people have been put on it due to weight gain issues with alternative meds. There seems to be a tendancy to report a metalic taste in the mouth as a side effect.

If you take this med an are on the pill then you will need to speak to your doctor about it as your pill may need altering.

this is actually quite interesting.im on solian and seroquel cos i had a breakdown 3 years ago .i put on weight due to the meds and im usually very slim and now i aint so slim so i kicked up major fuss with the doc.
there was a doc in for a few months who had an idea to put me on topamax bcos one of the side effects is weight loss .
its actually an epilectic drug i think but anyway since i have been taking 75mg of it nightly i havent put on any more weight .im still over weight but its stabilised me i would believe i mean they still give it to me im taking it ages now i havent had any side effects .i havent lost any weight now as promised but then i havent really got much bigger either .i only take this drug for weight issues nothign else
if u r putting on loads of weight it will help u that way i would think .
i did up the dose to 100mgs and felt very unwell so i lowered it again becos it can cause side effects with the kidney functions or is it liver i dont know the doc will tell u anyway they will do blood tests initiallty.
i would say good thing for this drug .like you may be not be slim jim in the morning but it stemmed the weight gain for me and i was putting on savage weight from the meds .im still batling with my weight every day and as i was once fit and stunning now im just dumpy and out of breath.it really pisses me off cos its not my fault and its awful to see ur looks go like that moan moan .and as im also threding about the rest of my life falling apart why not be upset abput this too.but i will say at least that doc had the initiative to put me on the drug whereas the rest of them didnt give two ****s and just kept nodding while they kept their perfect figures
anyway i hope it agrees with u and hey u might have even more luck with it than i have had .hugs xxx

I'm on this drug for migraines, been on it about two years now. I've lost loads of weight since being on it despite being on mirtazapine and sulpiride both of which can make you put on weight. Wouldn't say it has done anything for my mood though.

I was put on topiramate at 200mg for bipolar disorder. It didn't stop me bingeing, but I didn't put the weight on. However it gave me massive headaches everyday (once it got to the top dose I was on) and the worst thing was it gave me really bad memory problems. I couldn't remember loads of words - even some of my family's names.

im on topiramate although i am currently being taken off it. i was on 200mg a day for weight loss due to me putting on weight coz of other meds (quetiepine, respiredone). i have a few side effects, mettallic taste in my mouth, increased agitation and pins and needles a lot more than normal but those are to be expected apparently. in regards to weight loss, it did suppress my appetite but didnt actually cause me to lose any weight. i hope this medication is successful for you
