Do you get flak about your religion?

If this isn't allowed, somebody tell me??? Thanking you!

I'm just curious as to whether or not people get flak about being religious or even about being non-religious? So I'm a Baha'i I don't shove it down peoples throats (and some people do *headdesk*) but occasionally when people push me about drinking and don't accep the 'personal reasons' excuse I say it's because of my religion which lets a whole different cat out of the bag. So i'm just curious as to what peoples experiences are with this? and I know a friend who is an Atheist and gets sh*t becasue of that. So this isn't an us and them thread and in no way is it a thread for arguing whether people should be religious or not!

Just curious as to whether or not people get flak (****) about their choice in religion (or lack thereof).

^_^

i don't really follow any religion. but no matter what you believe in, you'll always get someone/some people forcing their beliefs on you or telling you what you believe is crap. its the same with anything, not just religion. its a matter of opinions and openmindedness. lol. there's my 10c worth. =)

The broken bones they heal no more, no more
With my last breath I’m choking
Will this ever end? I'm hoping
My world is over one more time

I totally agree with that. I just don't see why others see the need to comment... it's not affecting them! it's our choice... same with atheism... it's their choice!

I used to be a really pretentious, annoying 12yo Christian at school and got a LOT of flack for it. Mainly because I didn't know when to shut my big mouth. When I grew up a bit and got over myself a little, it wasn't an issue at all.

I guess it depends on how people handle it. These days, if I had to give myself a label, it would be agnostic. I don't really get any comments at all on it and if anything it just fuels some really great, insightful conversations with new people.

I'm not hugely public about my choice of faith since I've only recently nurtured that part of me again, but I do get some from the "Christian Community" because I'm not exactly a textbook/cookie cutter Christian. I walk into a church and everyone tries to convert me to their denomination and I'm like "uh, I believe in God and Jesus like the Bible asks and live my life according to His wishes the best I can...I think I'll be just fine without joining your church." *shakes head*

I don't follow a religion, so no =D.

And I don't give flack to those who do, either (which is just as well considering I'm an atheist living with a devout Christian)

Oh, and Jess, I have to admit, I've not heard of Baha'i before. Educate an ignorant person plaz?

I'm not religious.
I don't call myself an atheist,
Because I understand that people have there beliefs, and everyone should feel free to beleive in whatever the hell they want.

I hate people on the street, especially certain places in london, shouting at passers by and preaching to you.
Now that f*cks me off.

I do hate being preached at. *growls* I remember when I was younger, going to a christian summer camp with my best friend and coming home in hysterics becasue I was going to hell becasue I wasn't a christian... my mum threatened to sue.... she made one of the camp counsellors come out and apologise. I also got banned and they got in a fair amount of trouble for telling a 12 year old "you're going to burn in hell for not belieivng what we believe" O.o but on the other hand the father at Geelong Grammar (Father Phil) was AWESOME! And he and i use to sit in his office for hours debating religion. One of his oldest friends who'd been a priest for over 40 years became a Baha'i. ahhh good times

oooo, i have a friend who's a bahai! it sounds like a really interesting religion :)
yeh anyways, i would catagorize myself as an athiest.... when i was younger my family went to a christian community church... i'm not exactly sure if that means anyone with christian beliefs is welcome or if its a branch of christianity hehe, but i havn't gone in a few years, and i duno... i just find that i don't really believe in it. i've never really gotten made fun of for it, and i try not to be too cynical or anything of other peoples beliefs. sometimes i kind of fail miserably, but there you go.

Life is just a series of moments.

I never had a religion growing up, and still don't have one now. I just feel like there's no real proof that any one religion is "the truth", and I'm not going to find out what "the truth" really is until I die anyway, so why bother with it while I'm alive?

Anyways, I'm cool with religious people, but a lot of them are not cool with me. I've probably recieved the bible in it's entirety in pamphlet form, lol.

I wouldn't give you flack for choosing not to drink because of your religion. However, if you sat there the whole time lecturing the people who are drinking I would prolly dump a beer on your head. :P

What annoys me is not only when people lecture others on their choices outright, but when they do it subtly. For example, one day I was driving home from Uni, which was a several hour trip, with two friends who also lived in the same area. One of my friends is uber religious, but we had a "live and let live" agreement. However, a friend of his was also with us, and the guy was even more religious than my friend. I had the music on softly in the car for background noise, and had the speakers in the back of the car turned down, so only the front speakers were working. The first couple hours of the trip this guy was the most annoying wanker I have ever encountered. When we stopped for a break I pulled my friend aside and told him that if his friend didn't knock him off I was going to dump him on the side of the road!

Anyway, it turned out that in their religion it's against the rules to listen to anything but approved hymns. My friend pretty much ignored that rule, so it wasn't one i knew. And insted of TELLING me that the guy was an annoying **** because he was trying to drown out the music so he didn't have to hear it.

Yeah, I was not amused.

Well it breaks my heart to see you this way,
The beauty in life, where's it gone?
And somebody told me you were doing okay,
Somehow I guess they were wrong.

Ha! I was once at a street fair for Summer Solstice that was being protested by a religious group. My friends and I were standing in a little group and one of them stood in the middle and waved pamphlets in our faces and ignoring us when we told him we were not interested. Finally we took the pamphlets from him just to make him go away. Then we made paper airplanes out of them and flew them at him.

*ahem*

P.S. Jess, I've been to the Baha'i Temple in Chicago, its beautiful!

See...I would never preach at anyone, I actually dont like being preached at either, its just....Ive been lectured before about how crap my beliefs are and Ive been told Im stupid etc....so to me thats like preaching the other way,if that makes sense?! I think...as Danz said, everyone has things they believe in and people should be free to believe in what they do without having to explain why theyre christian/athiest etc etc
