Bi-polar, depressed or just plain moody?

I don't know if anyone has insight on this, or maybe experience with themselves but here's my question.

How can you tell if you are bi-polar, depressed or just moody? My doctor diagnosed me as depressed but I go up and down so much, it's crazy. I don't do the normal "manic" type things like spend a lot of money, stay up for days, etc but I do go from feeling terrible to feeling great in a short amount of time. (a day, sometimes a few hours...it depends) I never have had true manic behavior but since the doctor thinks I have "moody depression", I'm on Lamictal which is used for bi-polar mostly. It's not really doing the trick as far as my moodiness. I want to get off pills but I am wondering if I need more. :( I was just wondering if anyone else is like this...

No, I tend to vary between severely depressed, regular depressed, and some islands of wellness, as I call them. The depression peppered with anxiety, dissociation and the usual PTSD stuff.
Have you read about Cyclothymia? It's known as 'soft bipolar'.

Have you done a mood chart? Have you looked into any possible connection with your hormone cycles?

Hey. My doctor diagnosed me with bipolar II, then I got two other opinions and it was the same thing. It varies between severe depression, super hyper creative happiness, and severe anxiety (with normal times in between). Usually, these last anywhere from a week to months, but I have had something called "rapid cycling" where my moods are constantly changing over short periods of time.
Anyway, that's me.
I'm also on Lamictal, but found it to be incredibly helpful with my moods. Maybe it's just not the right med for you.
Who knows.

I've often thought it was hormone related until recently. I've been down and it's not that time. I'm going to look into that Cyclothymia. Maybe I am on the wrong pills. I want to be off everything and she told me I need to be stable for a year before that can happen. I don't want to start over...

There's also this thing my psychologist told me about that IS hormonal, but different than PMS. It's mood swings (mild to severe) that occur during certain times of ovulation, etc. Basically, one of these events happens every 11 (?) days or so. I think it's always a good idea to get other opinions. Or do extensive research on the internet. There's a really great website, and I can't remember it. Well, if I find it, I'll let you know.

I'm basic depression. Lamictal helps stabilize my moods. When it's cranky week, my moods can switch every two hours! It helps.

In forgiving others, we are not exonerating them. They may not deserve exoneration. Rather, in forgiving others we are giving up our anger over the fact that what happened is not what "should" have happened or that our life is not the way it "should" have been.

I was going to mention Cyclothymia to.

I like the idea of the mood diary but the thing I would say to you is that however sane or insane we are are moods will fluctuate and sometimes we can look into things to much. If you are honest with your Dr. they should keep an eye on things and at the end of the day they are the ones who can diagnose. So my advise to you is to enjoy the happy times and try and make them last.

Bi-Polar is a mood disorder, characterised by frequent swings between an elated, manic mood and a low, depressed mood.

For more information regarding bipolar:

Also, I feel a lot like the OP however I have been diagnosed with Dysthymia. Which.. doesn't really cover it much! But I know how you feel. Take care xo
