chest clinic appointment
hey guys.
i went to my hospital appointment on the 24th december at the outpatients chest clinic at the hospital as my doctor was quirying the diagnosos of asthma.....turns out i do have asthma and have been given a peak flow meter and the brown steriod inhaler to us everyday aswell as having the blue one for emergancies.
thats all ok with me.
whats scary is he went through family history with me and with lung disease and lung cancer in my family history (my nan my auntie my dad and mum) they said i have a huge risk of them in the future,.....what they hve also said is i may be allergic to a bug in the air....wich scares me.
what would happen if i am?
i never had chance to ask them what they meant as i was given a slip to go and have blood taken.....they took four lots wich is scary 2.
i have to wait untill the 4th february to get my results back.
till then i have to record my peak flow wich tbh is really bad.
it was 350 L/min but now its gone between 250 and just under 300 L/min.
they calculated my lung capacity and for someone my age weight anf height it should be 500 L/min and record how many times i use my blue inhaler and how many times i wake during the night with my breathing.
what i really want to know is
is this all normal procedure with asthma sufferers?
and how do other people control their symptoms...
and any advice?
thanks

If you have been having problems with your chest for a long time then it is going to take a while to get it sorted even with medication now that they have found a cause. The brown inhaler is a preventor I think it has steroids in it and prevents your chest from becoming inflamed. I had to do the whole peak flow thing when I was younger (I think it is still in the cupboard) but I was a rebel and never did it. I only have it because of my allergies in the summer and when I get chest infections asthma plays up. They have tried to put me on the brown inhalers before to prevent me from getting chest infections as bad as I do but Ive never taken them really. Sorry going on a ramble here.
I think it is pretty normal procedure they are taking. I wouldn't be too worried, don't stress yourself out about it as they will tell you if they are concerned about anything x

I'm sorry but i dont have asthma so cant really answer your questions. Can you go and see your g.p. to ask what you want to know. They may well be able to help with regards your family history. do try not to worry though, just because members of your family have been ill doesnt mean you are going to be.
Good luck with the treatment and i hope you feel better soon. *hugs*

maybe try ringing NHS direct and ask for more info? Air born allergens are common and include pollen, dog/cat hair, dust and all kinds of bacteria. A lot of asthma sufferers are allergic to pollen (hayfever) and dust/dustmites. Does the bed you sleep in ever get hoovered? when you change the bed, hoover the mattress and turn it over, hoover the bottom too. Take the pillows outside, peg to the line and beat them to remove dust. See if you can buy a dust cover forp illows and mattresses as they can be washed to remove dustmites and dust. Hoover the carpet (especially around and under the bed) everyday and get woodflooring if you can. If you sleep near curtains then make sure they are washed regularly too.
