Ok, i know i'm not that old (nearly 23) and i know the answer to this question really. But i was looking at the information for the bbc documentary, and followed some links they had there, and all the information talks about teenagers who self harm etc. and lots of the websites are aimed at children and adolescents and people are told to ring childline etc.
I feel like maybe i'm too old to be doing this. It's clearly not right that i'm doing this into my 20's? I know that's not true really, but i guess i just want some reassurance from others that i'm not the only one.

Sweetheart, that documentory was very flawed in the way it prescented the demographics of self harmers.
Im sorry thats made you feel 'too old' but thats just not the case, for a fact I KNOW a lady in her late 30s that self-harmed, so its definatly not confined to people in their teens. Besides, on vets there are many people in adulthood that still struggle with SH.
I reccomend samaritans, they are fantastic, better than any NHS crisis team, so if you need to call someone, try them.
I guess I have missed the doc if your talking about the one called 'cut up kids'
Take care xx Marie xx

No you aren't at all and despite what that documentary implies you are far from the only person over 18 who does it *hugs*. Unfortunately it is an often misguided belief that only teenagers and children self harm, please don't let it get to you xx
Thanks guys. Marie - I was just looking at the info about it on bbc website. The cut-up kids doc isn't on till tomorrow eve so you haven't missed it :)

Hey Sopranonut,
Ive not been around the vets for a while ive needed to hide alot, but ive been in vets along time and im a guy and im 42 so its clear self harm does affect more than just teenagers. I have only been self harming for about 4 years, its a coping mechanism to help us manage.
Please dont say its not right that you do it or that your too old to be doing this, im probably one of the oldest here as a self harmer. Yes this web site does generally cover ages up to 18, but there is also a veterans forum for those of us older than 18.And RYL never says you have to be a certain age to use this site.
Im sorry that the documentary wasnt a good one, self harm affects all age groups and can affect people at any time in their life
i hope you hang around and get from ryl the support you need, i certainly have recieved very good support from RYL and the VETS and found many friends, altho im struggling with trust right now, i wouldnt be here if it wasnt for the people of RYL and vets.
so welcome and please stay around and im sure you will feel better soon.
Dave

Sopranonut - I'm 22, although I started harming when I was a teenager. I don't think it's something you can just grow out of, at elast not if there's an underlying problem such as depression or anxiety.
Thats the most bizzare way of putting it ive ever heard, but i know what you meant!!! :P

hiya I work in an EMI nursing home and I see people in heir 60s/70s self harming, pinching themselves, biting themselves, hitting themselves all sorts. Hope that doesn't make you feel too old! x
Hey, I think everyone's pretty much said everything, but just to add, I'm 24 and don't see it completely disappearing any time soon. I used to think it was only a teenage thing until I found Vets and I'm very glad I did
I'm 41 and have been SIing since I was 14. It is a coping mechanism and it does work sometimes otherwise we wouldn't do it. You're nothing resembling too old to ask for help.
Welcome to vets.
Offering an encouraging hug to you.

In forgiving others, we are not exonerating them. They may not deserve exoneration. Rather, in forgiving others we are giving up our anger over the fact that what happened is not what "should" have happened or that our life is not the way it "should" have been.

my whole life has been. running with the wind. and playing with the cowards. it’s so hard to see. i’m fractured within. a poet in a window. we’re bastards and thieves. we’re lovers and saints. we’re holding on to mourning. and in the shadows i will be. until the sunlight melts away. until we tire of murder...fill me up with love...say goodbye when you leave. remember to breath. remember to listen. it’s getting harder to be. the son you want of me. the son i’ll never be.
