A question for anyone on anti-psychotics...

Have you ever been on more than one anti-psychotic medication at the same time?

Have you ever had comments been made about the option of being on one or more anti-psychotic medications?

I am wondering due to differing opinions about the issue and just thought I would ask to see if it throws up anything I can think about or look into.

Backstory, partner was on high dose of Quetiapine and low dose of Chlorpromazine [both anti-psychotics] for a long time. In hospital recently they changed the Chlorpromazine to Haloperidol but said that she could not be on Quetiapine AND Haloperidol because the BNF does not condone the use of two antipsychotics so she would need to taper the Haloperidol off immediately.

Obviously I wonder the validity of the statement about being on more than one antipsychotic because she been on two for a long time, and in hospital they even had her on all three I have mentioned for a couple of days.

The Haloperidol seems to dim her voices a bit, so it would be good to know HOW frowned upon being on two at the same time really is. If its a matter of opinion or a hard and fast rule that cannot be broken. I know all psychotropic medications react with one another, but there has been no side effects so far, on any of the combinations they have had her on.

I'm currently on my third anti-psychotic. Do you mean have you been on more than one at the same time, or at seperate times?

At the same time.

Just about all anti-psychotics have been tried alone, except Clozapine, but I dont think that could be justified anyway, not with the diagnosis its hoped to treat and the sort of medical checks needed to have someone on that safely, from what I know anyway.

In hospital, I was on olanzapine and haloperidol at the same time for a while. It was only when I was incredibly distressed though and I was tapered off the haloperidol after a couple of weeks, long before I was discharged.

I was originally on Risperidone, was taken off due to very severe and serious side effects. Then I was put on Quetiapine, was taken off because we decided to try my current medication. I am on Clopixol as a depot, with Clopixol tablets as a PRN when the voices go bad.

Oliver: from the tone of the post, I think she means two at the same time, which is generally not recommended, but it does happen.

I was on 2 at the same time at one point. I think it was Quetiapine and Rispiridone. I can't remember the exact medications because it was years ago, but i remember being on 2 for a long time.

I think it's not generally advised unless the benefits outweigh any risks.

I'm fine! Totally fine. I don't know why it's coming out all loud and squeaky, 'cause really, I'm fine!

Who else is fine?!?!?

Like others said it's generally discouraged but can be done under Dr discretion. Mind do a couple of good leaflets about antipsychotics.and i think this question is covered. I have only ever been on one ap but there is a possibility of going on another in addition if my raised.prolactin symptoms get worse. I would go on aripiprazole as well as risperidone as apparently the former can reduce the side effects of the latter.

I may have heard that too; if you mean the Aripiprazole can reduce the weight gain side effects of the Respiridone?

I'm not sure about the weight gain, if so that's pretty good. I meant the raised prolactin/lactating side of things.

I have almost always been on two at the same time, currently chlorpromazine and piportil, although haloperidol worked well for me too x

I have been on three at the same time. Clozaril, clopixol and Haloperidol PRN. the Haloperidol wasn't a regular dose but I was taking i at least once a day for maybe a couple of months. Although I guess being in hospital I was monitored. However i was on Clozaril and clopixol together for a long time.

I have taken Haloperidol as PRN in addition to a usual antipsychotic.
Last year I was on risperidone as well as a depot of Clopixol for a few months, now just on the Clopixol depot.
