Bipolar or Derpession?

I've been having a really tough time these past few years. Recently I've been trying to find out what it is. I've come across both depression and bipolar. Can you be both or is it where you can only have one? I have really bad mood swings but could that just be a teenager thing? I fit along both categories except my Depression lasts only a few hours to months before I start to feel happy and full of life again. I might be sad but I can still manage to smile and make it through the day without wanting to just disappear. My moods are really unstable. It affect my school work, my social life and anything else. There are time where I just want to fall of the face-off the earth and not be around anybody and other times when I do enjoy the company of others. I also focus on a lot of my hobbies. I lack focus and motivation somedays but can be on top of my game the next. It affects a lot of what I can do. My eating patterns also change depending on my moods. I'm pretty sure I am I have an e.d.n.o.s. When I'm really depressed I also tend to cut my self. I do this more than I should. It almost relives me. It sounds crazy if you don't self harm but when I do it, it feels like I'm getting rid of my problems. I know that's not the case but it really does feel like all that bad energy is being expels through my body through that small slit. I don't do it a lot but when my emotions are too much to hanle it's like my escape. Is it just depression or bipolar?

I really think you should speak to a doctor only they can diagnose you.
No one here can do that.

Also don't think you can have both depression and bipolar because depression is a symptom of bipolar.

I agree with seeing a Dr.

Depending on your age it may well be a teenage thing. I have bipolar but I look back to my teenage years and I was a moody so and so up and down left and right and yet it's nothing like bipolar as I now know it so for me I think those mood swings were just being a teenager with depression.

You can't have bipolar and depression as if you have bipolar the depression is one of the mood categories so a part of the bipolar.

Thank you for replying. I've come to terms with my problem. The next step is going to be hard for me though: getting help. I don't know where to start. I think that a conversation with my parent is in dier need. I wouldn't know how to start it but there's only so much a person can take.

What about writing down what your struggling with. What you want them to do to help and so on.

You then have a base for a conversation and if you struggle to talk you can hand over what you've written down.

2confused you've pretty much described my life in your post. I have no concrete diagnosis either and I'm so all over the place I wouldn't know where to start. I'm here if you ever need to talk :)

I think that writing this down is a great idea. I am bilingual so sometimes talking in one language is hard for me. I think my parents know something is wrong but they don't really talk about it. Is it best to do it with the entire family or just my parents? Also what happens next?

Just start with your parents you could maybe tell any brothers or sisters but I would stick with just your parents for now. Work on it as a family and it will make it so much easier.
I really wished I had told my parents earlier than I did.

Definately start with your parents and take it from there.

Mood instability can mean all kinds of things, so I'd see if you can talk to someone about what's going on for you soon. Not necessarily to diagnose you, but support you in finding any possible patterns in what's going on for you, and look at ways of finding more stability.
