Help?
I need help ending a relationship. Nothing to do with whether or not to do it or so much how, it's the when.
Any other time I would have done it by now, I've had to put it off because of the Christmas/New Year period. I thought it would be kinder to do it in January, but can't help feeling cruel and fake right now. I've tried to be distant and unaffectionate... not tried, I have been. But all it's done is given him the idea that something's wrong and made him cling tighter.
I can deal with going through this at Christmas. I can deal with waiting. I can deal with giving myself time to ensure it's what I really want. I can't deal with clinginess and lies. I can't see him at New Year and let us enjoy ourselves- it's mean. But I can't think of a way of getting out of it other than being honest.
Basically I have two ways forward, I think.
First is to keep up what I have been doing, make my excuses and white lie for New Year and settle things in January face to face (I am in Birmingham, he is in London so I haven't had to see him face to face over Christmas).
Second is to end it over the phone. I'm thinking I could call him up in between the 28th and the 30th which is mid ground from Christmas-New Year and be straight with him but rather than do it and cut contact, do it and arrange to meet up with him in January to talk face to face anyway to clear and reconfirm things. Would that be a cruel and cowardly thing to do?
I just don't want either of us to have to go through more pain than we're already going to have to go through. I'm not scared of seeing him, I just wish I could see him right now and do it but because of the time of the year I feel like I can't.
