NHS Direct

I was just wondering what people's experience of using NHS Direct are, when in distress.
I'm thinking of ringing them, but don't know how likely they are to call an ambulance.
Has anyone phoned them in a crisis, and NHS Direct have then called for an ambulance?
Also, if you don't give them your name/address, can they track your number down?

I've phoned, I wasn't in a major crisis, but the nurse was nice, they put me up to the top of the call back list when I described MH distress, they told me to go to A&E not sure what would hav happened if I'd refused to do so, I'm not sure about them tracking you. I think mostly what they do is advise you if you should seek help urgently (A&E) or if you should see your GP, speak to an out of hours doctor etc. It's always worth a try though

I've done the request a call back from them thing a few times. To do that you have to give a name and address, so I'm not sure if you can not do if you ring them...

Never had them call an ambulance for me, they did call the crisis team for me a few times though

NHS direct got my out of hours GP service to call me back ASAP. They have also somehow [I did not give my address and called on my mobile, I think they passed my mobile number and first name to police and the police did a search and found my address] got the police to pop round too.

I would be honest, give your address and be open, say you don't want an ambulance if you don't want one, and say you'd be willing to speak to the out of hours GP if they think you need to talk to a Dr.

You can always call Samaritans too.

Maybe you need to make an urgent GP appointment or pop up the hospital?

Do you want to talk about what's been going on, here? xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I found a useful Yahoo! question on this which might answer some of your questions:

Personally I haven't tried them. I had the number typed out on my phone the other day, but didn't go through with it.

Thanks for your replies, they were helpful.
I havent got the courage to ring them, i dont want an ambulance to be called.
I can imagine the scenario in my head: ring for help, they call for police because i wouldnt want to give them information, when they got here, i would be so terrified id lash out, and swear at them, end up getting dragged out of my house in a van.
I am feeling in a real dream state, and have this quite a bit. Because its a dream, there are no consequences to my actions.
I have urges to do random stuff, some stuff that could be harmful. Some include shouting down the street, imparticular if i see a police car, bashing myself against lamposts, running into the road, pushing others into the road.
I know what the police are doing too. They have cameras in my house, and are watching all my behaviour, and have planted some chemical in my arm (i saw all the colours in my arm) which makes police able to read my thoughts. There were ants in our house the other day, put there by the police which were carrying devices into our house so they can monitor me.
Im so terrified.
I wish i could wake up from this dream.

I've called them before, they were really helpful on the phone.
However, they had called the police, who turned up at my house. I was in such a bad place that I ended up assaulting one of the officer's and being arrested.
I would say they are very helpful, but it's just a case of how unsafe they perceive you to be.
I know you can use the call back thing anonymously, but when you call, they do ask for your name etc.
