So this was a thread about 2 years ago and tomorrow is Wednesday, and this is a REALLY good idea. Tell everyone you know about it:
What is White Wednesday?
White Wednesday is the one day of the week that we collectively encourage people to go that little bit extra to help you recover and feel more comfortable in yourself. If we work together as a community to support and encourage one another, we can get much further than if you go this road alone. You are not alone.
What do you do?
For Self Harming:
Self Harming can often become a daily and overwhelming thing, but White Wednesday encourages us to find other ways of coping and to try and get through the day without cutting or overdosing. But Self Harming isn't just about how we hurt ourselves, so maybe we could try and focus on other aspects of our life that Self Harm has affected. For example, you could try and not look for scars on other people when you're out and about. You could buy that t-shirt you wanted but you were unsure of because it showed your scars. You could try and address the main causes behind your Self Harming.
For Eating Disorders:
Eating Disorders affect us every day, and because of this, the difficulties we experience can be even tougher to improve. But it doesn't have to be to eat more, because we all know it's not as easy as that. Eating Disorders are about the feelings after all. With this in mind, perhaps on White Wednesday you can try to think more positively about food - what's your favourite food? Which foods do you think taste good together? Thinking about food doesn't have to be what it contains and what it will do to your body if you eat it. And because Eating Disorders affect the way we think, it also alters our opinion of our bodies. So maybe you could buy that t-shirt or dress you wanted but were too scared to buy because you didn't think you looked quite right in it. You could go to that birthday party, you could try one of those snacks. White Wednesday is all about making the extra effort to help you. That could mean trying to finish that plate of food or to increase portion sizes. Exploring healthy alternatives to binge foodsor even distracting yourself from bingeing could be a good goal. It may also mean that you really try not to purge after a meal, or to have at least one healthy meal that day. Whatever it is that the Eating Disorder has affected, you can work on it.
For Substance/Solvent Abuse:
If you have substance/solvent abuse problem, going a day without it may seem like an impossible task. But it doesn't have to be. Going without is only one suggestion to how you can use White Wednesday to your advantage. Most of the admitting you have a problem is the hardest part of the addiction, but maybe on White Wednesday you can think extra hardevaluate the best way forward about your situation and ; confide in a friend, talk to that doctor or pick up that information leaflet. Often the addiction can make us feel ashamed or uncomfortable in social situations, but it is important to get out of the house and meet people.
For Abuse Survivors:
Suffering any kind of abuse can make us feel unworthy of treating ourselves, even basic self care. White Wednesday could give you the opportunity to try doing something nice for yourself. Try setting aside that day, or if you have prior commitments, just an hour or as long as you can to switch your phone off and take some time for you. Go for a walk, go shopping, bake something you like, or just sit and allow yourself some time to cry and feel the emotions you can tend to repress in every day life. Something that can be good for expressing feelings and emotions is painting and reliving lost childhood or feelings of innocence. Try buying yourself some bright coloured paint, a huge piece of paper and let rip! You could also choose your White Wednesday to be the day you try reaching out for help if you've never spoken about the abuse before. Various websites like RAINN and others have hotlines you can talk to through the computer, or trying writing an email/letter to a organization or charity.
For Depression Sufferers:
Depression can be a very crippling thing and can often make us feel like we physically can't do anything. But taking part in White Wednesday might be that drive you need to get out of the house and do something. It might be something you didn't do earlier that week because the depression made you feel too tired to do it. It could be to take a long bath or shower because you felt so low that keeping up basic hygiene felt like a struggle. It could be to answer the phone when it rings or to reply to that text you received, both of which you ignored because you just didn't want to talk to people.
For Your Own Reasons:
White Wednesday isn't restricted to the categories above, and so you can make this day a drive to do whatever you want to do. Make it that day where you do something extra or put that little bit more effort in what you do. It can be a day in general that you learn how to live your life again and reach out for support. Whatever you decide to do, do it your way.
How can I take part?
White Wednesday is completely voluntary, which means you can pick and choose if you take part or not. It's nothing you are tied down to. After all, recovery happens in your own time. If you choose to take part, then that's great! Share your achievement and your struggles in the Discussion and Support.
Feel free to take part! :D This will also be posted in the other topics!
