Triggering (Suicide) - My parents want to send me away...

As the title says, my parents want to send me away. To a residential treatment centre kinda place. But, I don't need help (I say that, but, well, I guess I really do.) I agreed to do it, but I don't want to. I don't really have any other options, besides kill myself (which seems nice) or stay here and end up ruining people's lives more than I already have. See, the only reason I agreed was to please my parents, and if I do go away, I won't be a bother anymore. But yeah, they want me gone because of my emotional unstability and self harm. Oh, and I'm 16, in Canada

Anyway, do those places even work? I mean, do they give you skills to cope, or do they just expect you to be fine there and don't care what happens when you get out?
(Btw, first post (:)

Hey there. First of all, welcome to RYL.

I spent three months in a residential program, and while at the time it was difficult, it gave me a lot of objectivity and perspective about my illness, my limits, and tools for coping. There was a lot of emphasis on group therapy and developing hobbies for a creative healthy outlet.

The program I went to was for people ages 18 all the way through to about their fifties...or mid-fifties.

I had a very good relationship with the staff and the program director, and some of them kept in touch with me after my discharge.

Of course, I'm not saying it will be like that, just giving a vague, short description of my experience. Hope everything works out.

I second what Morrigan said - about the bootcamp thing. I toured one that started you off in a room with nothing and you had to earn points to even earn a sheet of paper to write on. They bragged about how they had no problem restraining people for the slightest thing, and how they often dragged patients out of bed. It was terrifying, and seemed worse than a hospital.

I've managed to avoid residential treatment, but mostly just because I'm a single mum and have to be around to look after my kiddies and stuff but my best friend's done residential twice and both times it was really good, the second lot better than the first but still both effective containing helpful.
Oh yes, and she REALLY didn't want to go either time so it's not like she was set up for it to work.
But I also totally agree about making sure it's not the boot camp thing, she was in a hospital ward once where you had to earn points just to have basics and the attitude was about control not compassion.
Good Luck, I really hope your parents don't want you gone but rather want you to get the help they feel unable to give you
Ce.
