Pictures Posted In The Picture Thread

Ok the only way i am allowing this thread to be kept open is if we are civil and if we dont flame each other or get out of hand. So because of the recent thing on the picture board and the thread created to post your random photos and someone be asked to take there photo down because of the fact they have a bandage on their arm. The rules state the following

Please do not share any images or videos that go against any of the terms and conditions of posting. This includes images / videos of ANY injuries, including self harm, open wounds, bruising, broken bones, and burns. Triggering content such as blood, SI 'tools' or suicide scenes are also prohibited, as is the posting of an image or video that automatically links to other images/videos that breach these conditions (eg - some You Tube videos). In addition to this, you will not share any images or videos that could encourage eating disorders, or any image deemed to be 'thinspiration'.

For example : "look at my new scar : ", "this picture is a bit racist but damn funny - take a look :" pictures/avatars/signatures/videos containing pictures of blood, open wounds, suicide or 'tools/blades'.

i dont have anything against bandages just like someone said it might not even be from self harm. so what do you guys think about photos with new scars and banadages being up?.

i would rather see a pisture of a bandage than see a picture of a gaping wound.

Its a self harm website, with a picture forum.. what can you expect?

as long as everything is labelled properly, then fine.

I don't have a problem with having bandages and the such showing.

If a rule was in place which stopped photos with dressings being allowed to be posted, would photos of injuries which were caused in accidents, e.g. if someone broke a bone in a fall or anything like that, be allowed? Because I'm not sure whether you would be able to see the difference, the poster could easily say that their injuries were caused in an accident because no one would be able to prove otherwise.

That probably doesn't make a lot of sense >.<

But yeah, I think the rules regarding posting pictures and stuff are fine as they are, and I don't have a problem with any photos that have been posted.

Now I'll play your ghost as my ace, whenever I'm led astray.
But I am actually good, can't help it if we're tilted.

I think that if someone wants to post a picture, and they happen to have a banadage on, they should still be allowed to post. It has to be better than having visible wounds, yus?
If I broke my arm, and had a picture of me (that showed my arm in a plaster cast) should I be allowed to post it?
Maybe not everyone can deal with seeing bandages on someone, but in my honest oppinion, tough. Look at the title of the thread, if it says "may be triggering" for whatever reason, and you dont want to risk getting triggered....DONT LOOK!
Seeing bandages on someone, in a picture to me is the same as seeing them on someone whilst out and about. Would you go up to someone and say "Excuse me. Seeing your banages upsets me, and makes me feel bad. Could you please keep them covered when out of the house?"
And RYL is a website that deals with SH/mental health issues/ED etc. There is bound to be things in here that not everyone likes/might upset some people.
I guess to me, the main issue I've seen here is people not using common sense. If you think it might trigger you/make you feel more triggered than before, dont risk looking at it. If you do look and it makes you feel worse, stop looking. Dont slate other members unnecersairily. (sp)

My point is...pictures with bandages/new scars are fine. Open wounds etc. not so fine.

Ok..so rant over.

Well a picture was shown recently of someone going to their prom on crutches. That quite clearly showed that they had some form of injury, why would a bandage/cast/sling be any different?

I think the thing with not posting fresh wounds is because of the triggering aspect of seeing blood and to try and avoid competitiveness regarding stitches and things.

I guess I don't understand how a bandage could be offensive. If she was wearing arm warmers the wounds would be hidden and exactly the same amount of flesh would be covered. Given that we are on a self harm site it wouldn't be a massive generalisation to assume that arm warmers are worn to hide scarring, should we ban photo's that have people wearing them or copious amounts of bracelets visible?

I guess I just don't understand why any member would want to make another member feel ashamed of themselves. We receive enough judgementalism from the general public without extending it to this so-called "safe place". I know people constantly go on about "bubble-wrapping", but this form of bubble-wrapping seems to deepen the stigma and shame that surrounds self-injury anyway. it seems that in order to protect the hyper-sensitive we may damage the opportunities of other members to share photo's of occasions that had nothing to do with self-injury and may damage their self esteem.

I don't have a problem with it.

I would have a problem with needing to put a 'bandage/dressing visible' lable on it though. It bothers me enough to have to put scars visible labels on things. I find that all those labels do is bring attention to the fact that said person has done it. I mean, come on, it's a self harm site, most of us have scars, like...get over it?

I realise that this thread is as a result of my post elsewhere and do not feel that the way people reacted to my feelings was fair and I believe could constitute flaming. I hope that people can abide by the warning of the thread starter, Ninja Duck.

I'm sorry but a picture I saw recently on a photo thread, I thought was distasteful. It showed a member with dressings on. I am currently really battling with my self harm and other far more important issues and feeling incredibly sensitive and going through a difficult time. I have no problem with people showing scars etc but pictures of dressings, I think, are inappropriate.

I know this is a self harm site and I am not asking to be wrapped up in conton wool etc but the image could have been edited in a way to show the member in what was a very nice dress etc with scars but without the dressings. Dressings equate fresh self harm. I am trying to fight against that but would love at the same time the need for the dressings i.e. fresh sh.

Someone has suggested that perhaps a hide box could have been used to note that there were dressings and I like that idea because if there had been a warning, I would not have seen the pictures and been upset in my super fragile state right now.

Seeing a few dressings on an arm of someone on a sh site naturally leads to the assumption of them beign as a result of self harm and to say otherwise is disingenuous.

Surely also, people can see the difference in bracelets and armwarmers as a way of covering things than dressings, which to me = medical = recent self harm = something which I am trying to fight (quite unsuccessfully) right now.

I hope that any responses on this are measured and fair and not targetted at me as I believe previous replies on the picture board have been unnecessarily harsh and that people are not taking the time to consider how it could make others feel.

I think so long as the banage or whatever is "clean" then it's fine. By clean, I mean no blood or whatever. I can see how it could be triggering to one who is particularly sensitive but at the end of the day I think we do enough (too much sometimes) to look after the members of this site and I don't see why, on a self harm forum, the occational bandage can't be shown so long as it isn't the main focus of the photograph.

I have no problem with scars either. Self harm is such a taboo anyway and the idea what they would unacceptable here is just disgusting. I'm really, really glad that we can show them in photo's (again, so long as they aren't the main focus).

I'm wondering about the thread labelling system. If bandages are going to be an issue, would the *scars showing* cover it? Or would we need a seperate *bandages showing* label? Personally, I think that would be complete over kill and totally unneeded; was just wondering on what others thought. Maybe the *scars showing* label could cover all scars, bandages, arm warmers or whatever related to self harm. No confusion that way.

Forgive me... but I think that's exactly what you're asking... What about if you saw someone walking down the street with scars and a bandage on? Would you ask them to put a cardigan on? This site, is and should be, the same as the real world, the world that we live in. Self harm is enough of a taboo as it is. We shouldn't have to hide who we are here.

I do appreciate that you're struggling at the moment and it must be really difficult for you.

No Reason, as you put it, "Dressings equate fresh self harm" That's not always the case.

Dressings arent always because of SH wounds. And would you rather she didnt have the dressing on?
You're not the only person going through this, and you're not the only one struggling. I'm sorry to hear that you are struggling, and we're here to help, however, the whole site cant be catered to one persons needs.
Like has been said before me, what else would you expect here?
To me, and from what I can gather, to most people here, dressings arent an issue. As has been said before, if the title says "may trigger" and you dont want to be triggered/dont feel safe enough, then don't look!

I don't have a problem with a picture of a bandage to be honest i would rather see that than some of the images i remember seeing on ruin with gapping wounds and tools which was a lot worse but i don't see the issue with it to be honest.

Here here!
This discussion is really annoying me to be honest.
You can easily say to me "If this is annoying you, don't come on this thread." However, I could say "If you don't like the sight of a bandage, don't go on The Picture Thread where I have seen plenty of members with bandages on their arms and no one's ever said anything.
If they got triggered, they didn't kick up a fuss about it, they got on with their lives.

So should you.

This is what I was worried about. I took great care not to target my opinion or reply against any one particular person.

i think it is quite hypocritical (elsewhere) for those who have told me to grow up cannot express their opinions without attacking me, personally.

I am not just struggling with sh but shitloads of things that alot of you could not even begin to imagine.

I haven't come across pictures of bandages and you may think this is weird but I would find a bandage image far easier to deal with than those dressings as the bandage is going to cover the whole area.

I'm not asking anyone to hide and as I have said again and again, scars visible to me are fine.

Further, I thought that particular board was as titled, random pictures etc. People keep going on about "may trigger" warning but there isn't such a label on that thread, just a "scars visible" one, which, as I have said, i can deal with.

Please can people stop making this thread so personal and just express their opinions in a fair and balanced way.

I agree with this - as in, when I see a pic on this site with bandages, I'm going to assume it's a result of recent self harm. It's not the same as walking down the street, because the percentage of self harmers is slightly higher here than on a random busy street.

With arm warmers or other ways of covering up, it's not as apparent, because there's no telling if the scars/wounds hidden are several years old or from yesterday.

I'm not triggered by it... but I can easily see why it might, and please everyone: Surely, thinking about it, it's not that strange. There's no need for insensitive comments. "Shut up and deal with it" is something I expect from bullies, not our members. (Yes, I exaggerated.)
