Oh, that's cool to hear, I will track down the non-family-friendly version for sure It sounds fun!

I'm just as passionate about what 4kids did to Yu-gi-oh. That heart of the cards and saving the world crap was not in the Japanese version. Why must they patronise children? Oh noes, a gun!
I've watched the Cartoon Network version of One Piece, which is possibly why I never got into it.
That is a very good point, so many things in America just taste, idk, fake would be the word which I am struggling to fit. It's a very peculiar place for a Brit haha.

I've heard they wrecked Yu-Gi-Oh with that same stunt. If they are going to take a tv show that was based on a manga that was intended for teenagers, you can't wreck it and try and market it for children.
They got lucky with Pokemon, that was intended for children. but it's a sucess they've never repeated.
And yes. that is definetly the reason you didn't get into it.

I tried watching one episode of the 4Kids dub, to see what it was like. 30 seconds in I had to stop. I felt physically ill.

There's this character Nami. She's trying to free her village from these pirates. Now, in the Japanese version these pirates have killed her adoptive mother years ago when Nami was a kid.
In the 4 Kids dub they wrecked the scene and changed the dialogue so nami's mother is "locked away in a dark dungeon forever! hahahaha" *dramatic music."
So our hero's come along and free the village. Everyone's happy and partying and celebrating. not once, is it mentioned, or even thought of, to go and get Nami's mother out of this dungeon she's supposed to be in.
Nope, Nami is away partying. 4Kids left that nice big hole in the plot so it seems like instead of Nami's dead mother finally being revenged, nami just seems to pull a big "F*ck You Mum, I'm too busy partying to think about you any more"
when the revolution comes, 4Kids are the first against the wall.

I liked the 4kids version when I was a child and tolerated it as a teenager because I wanted to find out what happens at the end, but then I found out about the proper version and I just fell in love all over again. Yu-gi-oh Abridged is amazing too.
Difference between American programmes and Japanese ones: Japanese people don't feel the need to shove a moral lesson down a child's throat.
I liked Nami! One of the few characters I remember.
dunno if you figured. but this is the **** that bothers me.

I will check out the link for sure, I am watching series 1 of Bleach atm, so will probably start sometime towards the end of this if you recommend it
I think it's an insult to kids to shelter them from things you know, yes, some things do need toning down and not exposing to them, but other things are facts of life and fairy tales basically warn us as kids of the world, so cartoons shouldn't sugar coat absolutely everything /ramble.

no, kids must be sheltered. they must never know bad things happen in the world. they must be locked away and force fed good stuff until their 21. then we can throw them out in the world. They'll do just fine then.
that's how you make a well adjusted person who can think for themselves and survive in the real world.

you have any idea how many complaints Disney had because Mufasa died in the Lion King?
that was ground breaking stuff, letting the good guy die. but then there are a few million complaints and disney chicken out and no good guy has ever been killed in a disney movie again.
*sigh* they had such potential and now they're all but dead.
Pixar is the only thing keeping them afloat.

Also, how stupid is this: Instead of having Yugi's mum be a single mother, they implied he lived with his grandpa alone.
Yeah, that's better. Kid lives with a creepy old man and never sees his parents. oh yeah, that's a lot better.

I cant say what the ending was. I watch them on the internet back to back. First in the Japanese, and now in the newly found English dub. it's been so hard to find an english dub that wasn't 4Kids.
I have no idea when one series ends and the other begins.
He gets to the Grand Line, I can tell you that
