It is fine peccatophobia. I feel like that about my doctor. He doesn't care about me and didn't react when I went off my meds, or when I self-harmed. He didn't even say anything; he pretended that nothing happened. My doctor thinks I'm "just another patient I've got to push through the system and get rid of asap".

A&E can be very variable. It really depends on what doctor or nurse you get. I've had some complete idiot triage nurses who can't understand English, which is not helpful when schiz has taken over your head.

Once I came in after I had self-harmed severely and they didn't even give me stitches. I had to walk around with a badly injured leg in severe pain for a week afterwards. All I could do was ask the school nurse for painkillers ten million times a day and put that useless cream on which made the pain even more unbearable. Had they given me stitches they would have covered up the bare areas and the skin wouldn't have to re-grow!

But the most helpful time I had when I was first admitted to hospital; the junior doctors were so kind to me and were always telling me that everything would be ok. The duty psych even came with me to the hospital to help me out.

But then, I've always been to the same A&E - St. George's.

A&E isnt ever that nice.
Get Patched up, wait for aaages, either get sent home or to hos, then get some leaflets on SH sent through the post a few days later.
The staff get too used to you.

It really depends on the A&E department and the people you see. I've had both ends of the spectrum.

It can also depend on your age. I was 15 when they were really nice, but as I entered the adult services, they weren't so nice to me. They treat adolescents better than adults, sadly.

I have generally had pretty good experiences of A+E but it really does depend which doctor or nurse you get. Generally the nurses are always nicer than the Doctors. I have only had two bad experiences with doctors who did not understand what the hell self harm was about.

I've had varied experiences. The first time I went in my local hosp for a cut, it was alright, although they wanted for me to wait for a psych evaluation even though I had a bed in the childrens ward in another hospital waiting for me, so I just left with my dad before they could make me stay. The second time in my local hosp, my psychiatrist had called up to get me to go through A&E quicker, and she had told them specifically not to ask questions about it, and they still did when my parents left the room, but the doctor made up for his shabby stitches (which left me with scars where they ripped) and awful manner by giving me crutches :). Hmm. The rest of the times were in unfamiliar hospitals like the Heath, where they were alright to me I suppose, but they couldnt exactly be nasty to me because I had a nurse with me >_< . When I've been in to my local hosp for breaking my wrist they were a little less understanding, but one doctor was really lovely to my mam when she got upset about me having to go to A&E all the time.
I suppose it can be varied with hospitals, it depends on their attitude towards self harmers.

It is stupid. I don't tell my doctor anything anymore because he just flips me off by telling me I'm attention-seeking, or that I am talking nonsense.

I really wonder how they would react if September 2007 (I was 17 at that time) was repeated? They had to call in security and I ended up in a big mess. I was lucky that I accepted outpatient treatment and I didn't get admitted again. Wasn't allowed back at school for a few days. Nearly got sectioned twice. I remember one of the doctors in A&E yelling his head off at some traumatised nurse to get an i.m. like a slave-driver.

I've been lucky in that I have been treated with respect and kindness despite being a frequent attendee as of late. There is one doctor who has treated me twice in a week for an overdose and still treated me as though I deserved his attention. In a way, it is hard when they are good to you because I think I don't deserve to be treated properly - if that makes sense. Anyway, fingers crossed that I don't end up having to see that poor same doctor again today

No reason, it is good that you have a kind-hearted doctor treating you. Good luck.

i agree with the age thing. i've been as a teenager and then againa as an adult, both times fors SI. the later time i felt people were patronising and really overly unsypmathetic

i went to a and e for an overdose last month. They were all nice to me and did what they had to as far as blood test/checking me over.

Though they told me it was essential i wait for the psych team to see me, even if i had to wait an hour or so, then came back and said the psych team were too busy to see me and i could go. So potentially i could have done to same thing again, i got sent on my way.

I find it a hard question to answer, they didnt help me, but did theyre job and were nice enough

The nurse that stitched my arm yesterday was lovely, really nice.

Then again i work in that hospital and had a collegue with me who is a pharmacist so i guess they had to be!! They let us wait in a side room with sofas.

I went through today because under the bandages my arm suddenly got warm and started bruising. i asked one of the docs and he said just book in and well have to have a look. i booked in, asked them to call my extension to save me waiting and this other doctor said ill just see you now in this side room. I eplained i was worried and he just said "well, yes, its going to do that isnt it". i felt so pathetic. i just told him that the other doctor wanted to take a look, so he had a look and said its fine.
pah
hes been rude to me before though when i was actually doing my job restocking their drug machine.

Yes, some doctors can be very patronising, it is awful that they don't have enough training.
I had a triage nurse pull my sleeves up without my permission and say "psh, so you've self-harmed before, well that's just silly".

When I went in for an OD last week everyone I saw was okay really.
I went in an ambulance and the paramedic who was doing all the tests on me was really kind. I got to A&E and saw a guy I saw last time who was nice and promised to try and make sure no other doctors told my dad abotu the last time I was in. I saw anotherwoman who was okay, just distant. Got taken up to a kids ward and saw 2 other nurses, one was really nicer and the other sorta hung around asking the occassional question. Another nurse came to put my canuella in and she was so lovely I just wanted to hug her lol. Had a diff nurse in the morning who seemed quite scary at first but she turned out to be cool too. Only had one nurse be an idiot, she walked in and sat down said "From the hospital's view, what you did was silly and stupid." and walked off again.

Besides her everyone was really good :)

Aah also one of the nurses asked to see my arms and I was expecting her to be quite patronising really but she just said she was quite worried abotu them getting any worse and wanted to keep me in overnight because she didn't think I was safe enough to go home.
A lot of the nurses ended up holding my hand for a bti which I thought was really nice as I was quite close to crying a lot lol.

Id only been to a&e once for something SI related and that was back in sept/oct 2006. I had cut my wrist, not badly enough to be fatal but they still checked it out anyway. I couldnt have stitches because apparently you have to be stitched within 6hrs and i did i at around 3am, so had the a&e wait not taken so long then i could have been in the time slot.
But everyone was really nice.
The nurse that i saw first was lovely and even though i hadnt said much she said 'awww, i just want to come and give you a huge', the doctor who checked the wounds out was okay...a little niave maybe....asking alot of rather stupid and obvious questions.
The phsyc nurse asked if i was suicidal, i said no (possibly a lie but i wasnt sure), she phoned the phsyc at camhs who had prescribed my meds because my actual person was away and she was not allowed to prescribe medication.
He was in the hospital but said he was about to go on his lunch break so to see him at the unit a few miles away in 2hrs....and that was it.
A few months later i was admitted into a MH ward for a month and i havent been since.
I stopped cutting, but i have started recently and the cuts have been so bad they have even worried me, and i dont get grossed out that easily...so thanks for opening this thread...i might actually go next time...
