A chat debate would have to be very carefully moderated as it could become heated very easily. But if its a special event that shouldnt be too hard
Are you doubting my modding skillz?:( x
There are times to stay put, and what you want will come to you.
But there are times to go out into the world and find such a thing for yourself.
I aint no abacus but you can count on me.

How would you feel about possibly creating a room every now and again in chat for debate? That way anyone harassing members about their beliefs etc could be kicked straight away, I wouldnt mind modding that.x
A chat room for the debate sounds good, better even.
I would still insist that it doesn't make the debate grossly informal.
Personally, I would like it if..
1. The debate structure remains. Meaning there would still be "teams", those teams would alternate reactions (but if it's a chat debate it would flow much quicker. Once all people on a each team have spoken, the floor could be opened to less restricted discussion.), etc etc.. How it would work setting up and preparing teams for a chat room debate, I can work on it if you'll permit me that much.
I don't care much for a mess of people all shouting in unison "I THINK SUCH-AND-SUCH AND YOU BETTER LISTEN TO ME!"
2. If the current mods are going to oversee the debate, I would like for them to be familiar with how to moderate a debate. No offence. Just being able to kick rude people is not enough. A debate moderator controls the debate. Again, this is an example of the formality I like.

Et c'est dans le soleil que nous avons grandi.
Feel free to PM me your ideas, we'll work together on it :) Im willing to learn.xx

being able to partake in a debate without curling up in a ball and crying because someone has a different opinion to you is a very important life skill.
As well as its a distraction.
As well as seeing things from another point of view can also help things.

What does any of this have to do with self-harm and mental health?
Surely it's positive to engage in something other than SI/MH stuff all the time?
I mean, I have reservations about people using RYL for more than just a site, and becoming too dependent on it/revolving their lives around it, but I do think that expanding your vision and frame of reference is never a bad thing, especially considering how self-centred and self-indulgent* a lot of people with psychiatric issues can be.
*Disclaimer: It's a widely recognised issue that people with MH issues can be self-centred, and it is also in no way a bad thing that some people are. It wasn't intended to be a negative comment or a criticism, rather a statement of fact, but I know that some people get defensive about it, hence this little ramble here.

I had also been going to suggest this but didn't know if we had the technical ability at the moment! But I also wouldn't mind helping out with the modding of such events - like Liv I can be very good with my kicking button when I need to be :)
I still have zee powerz and would be willing to share the wealth if liv lets me

What does the picture board have to do with self harm and mental health?
We could debate issues on self harm and mental health if it would make you feel better about it all but personally I think anything that opens your mind to something new (especially because in some cases you will be debating the opposite to what you believe) is never a bad thing.
It will also be VERY good for a distraction as preparing for a debate can be alot of work if you want it to be a good discussion. It will also teach people how to control their emotions as you should never let a debate become personal.

Now that, we could use. Definitely.
I was pretty much against the idea at first - as seen on the first page. But I must say the idea of chat debates has won me over. Not as easily controlled, maybe, but it seems less like this huge addition to the forums. It could be interesting.
I'm coming back to this idea because I want to talk about philosophy and all that sh1t. Since a formal debate is too much to coordinate, as an alternative what would you think of having weekly/ bi-weekly debates in the News/ Debate forum? I, or whoever hosts the debate for the week, would summarise the topic and a few of the basic tenets of each position on the topic. They would post the rules for the debate in the first post as well.
As for the conversation itself, there would be little formal structure. Participants in their first post would have to contribute something. (So jumping in to say "ur a dumbass" would not be allowed. After voicing their own opinions, participants could ask specific questions to other members or offer counter-arguments to their argument. Everything would be kept civil.
Eh, I can write out more rulez if people are willing to join in on the debates. :)
If you would like the debates to happen in chat I would be willing to moderate
