I thought in US they referred to it as university if you were going there for a specific degree, like law or medicine, the important jobs.
It's college if you're there for the arts degree, or media studies or philosophy, the non-useful qualifications.
but the second you specialise to a "proper" career it becomes university.
Nope, it it is still the same thing, different schools have different names Bethany College is the name of my school and my friend goes to West Liberty University, but it is the same. My school is actually better than hers, more majors including professional and pre-professional (go to this college for two years than to another one later). The word college is just a generic term of schooling above high school or secondary.

Shannon, maybe you could tell me. Why does hardly any American university teach geography/have a geography department? I find it incredibly strange.
There just is not that big of an interest in it over here, the more people that are interesting in a field of study, the more places that offer it, the opposite is the same as well. This does not apply to specially field of studies such at veterinary, medical, physical therapy, and other programs.
