But when animals like cats and dogs were first 'domesticated' they were not kept as pets as they are now, animals had to go through the same transitions we did, they pretty much went through it with us. When we got to the stage of being clever enough to use dogs for hunting dogs got trained, then we realised that certain types of dogs were better at it so we bred one with the other to go get a new bread. Now days we're mixing Yorkies with Poodles to get the poorly named Yorkipoos.
Don't you think the lucky wild creatures that avoided our sometimes worrying logic in the case of the poor Yorkipoos should be left to their own devises? What are we going to try breed hedgehogs with? The prospects are...frankly terrifying.
I agree with you in some respects. While we still held some of our 'wildness', the animals had a purpose. As we've become lazy, we're forcing the same state upon creatures which are not physically capable of been sat around for days on end. Look at border collies as an example, on a farm they're worked and serve a purpose. They can't handle been sat around all day!!! They went through the same transition as us but under our will and force. So many breeds only exist becasue of us (as humans) breding and interbred these animals. My arguement is that when we became 'domesticated' and didn't need to hunt anymore, we should have not bred these animals as 'pets' or 'status' symbols.
Have you ever seen a dog go stir crazy? its not a pretty sight; its a result of human 'kindness' which seems to be of selfish roots, rather than the reality of the future good. People get fighting dogs as 'cute' pets, but how many of them know of the spot in their jaw bone which can be used to control them when they're in a hyped-frenzy? How many know of their frenzies which they can slide into, taht which is bred into them?? Its aflaw in human thinking. We attempt to resolve problems from our own emotional state (i'e. pity and guilt); but not at the animal's level.

also when I was young and my family went Eurocamping (travelling europe and staying at campsites) a hedgehog came into the tent one night when there was a storm and ate a packet of biscuits :D xx

If this thread is still about hedgehogs (old English, hedgepigs) you may like to know that a few years ago some brainless idiots let some loose in South Uist in the Western Isles of Scotland.
They multiplied and spread north throughout Benbecula and North Uist. But there are no trees in the Uists and consequently all the birds are ground nesting - and hedgehogs eat birds eggs.
The damage being done to the local bird population was such that some conservation authority decided that the hedgehogs should be trapped and released on the mainland. Some hope in miles and miles of hill and heather but, if ever I catch one on our island, I'll happily post it to whoever would like it as a pet - provided I can work out how to stick the stamps on ...

I saw something about that in the paper ages ago, I think they were talking of culling a large portion of them? Well either talking of doing it or actually doing it, I don't remember.
I really, really want a giant African land snail as a pet :/
And Yorkipoos?? Yoodles is quite clearly a far superior name.
