I am currently:
Safe - Extremely painful muscle cramps

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm out of the country and can't see a doctor for another week.
For the past three weeks, I have been having severely painful cramps in my calf muscle. I am very athletic (distance runner), and I haven't started training any differently. I haven't ever had problems with cramps reoccuring so often for so long before although I have had them on occasion.
The cramps have started occuring more frequently in the past week. They always come at night while I'm asleep. I have to stretch the muscle with my hand and they last several minutes. Now the calf muscle near the inside is tensed similar to the feeling of a pulled muscle.
Is there anything I can do to prevent the cramps from coming back? Also, what can I do about the lingering pain? I just don't know what to do since I've never had this problem this badly before. :/

One thing is sure-
we have to do something.
We have to do the best
we know at the moment.
If it doesn't turn out right,
we can modify it as we go along.

i guess taking some anti inflamatories and keeping heat applied should keep it eased til you get home and see a doctor

Are you drinking properly? Vitamin and mineral imbalances can cause these and I would be suspicious of that given they're occuring regularly. As well as this, as there is lingering pain then I'd also wonder if there is something like a minor sprain or strain which is put more tension on the area and causing problems such as this. Really, as this is occurring quite a bit I would keep yourself rested, no running, walking only at a normal pace, not a brisk walk, though keep moving. Heat pads may help or a hot water bottle. As mentioned above, if the pain is really affecting you you could try something like Ibuprofen, however, that can mask the signs. If you do take this make sure you have no problems which go against it's use or take any drugs that interfere with it. Also make sure you take it as said on the label and with food but really I'd only take it if the pain is really getting to you.

If the cramping hasn't stopped for a couple of days by the time you get home mention it to your doctor. If it gets worse then you may be able to see a doctor over there depending where you are and where you've come from.
