Just Learning used to be one of my friends placements while she was studying to become a nursery nurse.
She absolutely hated it, and couldn't wait to find somewhere else for her to go.
She said it was so unorganised and the ratio's were always out. I can't believe a manager was incapable of understanding ratio's. That's the MAIN thing in nurserys, to ALWAYS have the right number of adults to children/babies.
Also - like litrali 2 steps from that nursery is Morrisons (the supermarket). I worked there for 2 1/2 years and saw some of the workers on a regular basis. Right sour faced idiots some of them.
My mum had met the little baby girl who died..only once though. Well, mum & i used to go to bingo quite often a few years back, and the baby happened to be a granddaughter of someone she knew.
It was so sad :(
And, around about the same time that happened in the nursery, a little boy in my area also died of choking on an apple (but he was old enough to have apple), it was just an unfortunate accident.
It made me very nervous working in nurseries. But some of the dippy cows i worked with in nurserys is unbelievable. Seriously..i've worked with people who have been employed with no qualifications (this was at a specific nursery where ofstead were there on a daily basis) and had no common sense. I was 16 at the time, and she'd walk out of the baby room to have a chat with someone and leave me on my own with 4 babys?!
I had to TELL her once not to give one of her crisps to a 6 month old. I was like wtf? I reported that actually to ofstead. Needless to say i didn't stay there long.
I am SO wary of working in nurserys now. That's part of the reason i came out of childcare, i can't stand nurserys. Not only is it the lack of common sense in some staff members, it's the bitching/backstabbing between the adults. I'm really not into all of that. It makes me feel uncomfortable and paranoid about who's going to say what behind MY back.
I'd definatly love to work with children though, i'm just not sure what avenue to take yet. The problem is the majority of the qualifications you have to earn, you have to have a placement to work in.
So i could brave it when i'm better, and go back to a nursery i've worked at/liked to finish my NVQ..or, look at different avenues to take.
