That's the difference between our uni and most I suppose. Almost everyone I know at uni is on the same course as me as we are very much in the majority in a small college and it is pretty social as are all courses of it's nature in the UK/ Ireland so we kind of met through freshers. Though, if you don't go to Freshers then you do meet up with people in lectures or if you join any societies and clubs. I know we are split up into smaller practical groups so we meet people through those and because we HAVE to work together to succeed in aspects of our course we do meet people in them so it isn't all about going to Freshers.
Freshers is the first week or so of uni in the UK. It basically has a lot of parties for the new students and a Freshers Fare which is where you go to see what is available at your uni and to join societies (and of course get free stuff)
