You don't have to go, like it's already been said it's a good place to pick up free pens etc (I got given a pineapple and a pot noodle amongst other things), but it's not the best place to make friends. If you don't feel comfortable going then just try getting to know people in your seminar groups or in your accommodation. Don't worry lots of people will be in the same boat as you.
