The girl lay in her bed dreaming, tired out from the day she had fallen asleep quickly. As a young girl her dreams had been of unicorns and castles in the clouds, but now her young dreams were tainted with a much darker feel. She slept silently, stirring occasionally, in her head playing a game in the garden with her young friends, however on looking up from her game she saw a figure out of the corner of her eye. In her head she turned to view the figure, and in her head she was met with the image of her mother. Her mother was wearing the same dress she had seen her father’s new bride wearing that afternoon, but this dress was not tainted with blood nor stained with the pain of loss. The girl watched as her mother opened her mouth to speak, but she spoke only a few silent words, “I love you darling, look after him,” and coming towards her, her mother kissed her forehead and said only four more words, “open your eyes, Rose.”
The girl woke with a jolt, feeling her forehead instantaneously. Whether a dream or not, whether she just believed it because she wanted it to be true or not, the girl felt sure a small part of her forehead was warmer than that of the rest of it. As her eyes and ears adjusted to waking, above the noise of the party still continuing below her she heard the faint sound of sobs coming from outside her room, and making her way to the door she pulled it open slightly and peered out through the crack she induced. Her eyes were met with the shaking shoulders of her father sitting at the top of the stairs and as she moved closer to him he raised his eyes to meet hers. The girl sat down beside the man she had once known as a pillar of strength, and looking into his eyes was met with the image of a broken man. Holding his arm to raise him from his drunken anguish she led him to his room and lay him down on his bed. Then sitting beside him she held his hand, much as she had held her mother’s, and whispered to him as he wept, “I’ll look after you daddy.”…

"Be nice. Think happy thoughts. Champion silver linings. Love all things (not just cute things like babies and kittens) & when you do love - love like they do in power ballads (you know like on a cliff with the wind in your hair and your eyes shut, knowing you'll never know love like this). Watch out for dog poo. Smile at people - even grumpy ones. Remember anything is possible & whatever you do always try to look on the bright side."
