Basically, the production team need a break after 4 years of working non-stop, and the three higher-ups for the show are leaving. Thus they're taking a bit of a break that year with only three specials, and Tennant took advantage of that to play Hamet (something that I really really really wish I could see *pout*).

*Sigh* I wish I lived in England so I could actually see these episodes on a tv before the dvds come out here in the States.

It was David Tennant wanting to play shakespeare first, rather than production team, but he didn't really want to leave the Dr Who role, and then production team were, like, he's the best dr and we're tired, so they decided to have a year break.....otherwise it would have been a brand new doctor.
