Lots of interesting posts but no-one's actually answered my question, which was just what would it take to make you stop smoking? Obviously best answered by those who are actually smokers!
For me it was the news that yet another person I knew had killed themselves unnecessarily and I therefore decided that rather than go on and on making excuses about not stopping yet, I would actually bloody well do it. And I had been an addicted smoker in my time - normally 12-15 a day but at one period when I was under extreme stress and working 22 hours a day for over 6 weeks I was up to 35 a day, purely as a crutch.
Now, not having smoked for over 20 years, I could walk into a smoky pub and it wouldn't worry me in the least. But outside, if I'm walking along a row of shops say, I find the smell of tobacco smoke from those who've sneaked out for a crafty fag to be extremely offensive, probably because the smoke contrasts so much with the outside air.
And a final word for all you smokers - you will stop sooner or later. It's just a question of whether it'll be voluntary! Oh, and Sod the Nanny State ...

Tony.

Never surrender.
