1. Yup yard waste sounds like your garden waste. Fwiw, I typically assume when people use the word garden there they're meaning a yard. So grass clippings, branches, leaves, etc..
2. I don't own an iron but I do own a kettle. If it broke I guess I'd be very very sad, order a new one, and just throw it in my normal garbage?
As far as I know here, normal humans can't just drive up to the dump, typically referred to as Mount [Company Name], or the recycling place because it is for trucks only. But I've also never tried. I did a google for my city and it looks like there are some drop off locations for recycling, and some random organizations you can contact for textile donations and house things, but nothing that appears to do recycling if they are not in good condition.
Also interestingly, have now learned that recycling goes to the "Materials Recovery Facility" which is definitely an unexpected name.
