I switched from mirtazapine to trazodone about 7 years ago. I found mirtazapine and trazodone to be about the same in terms of sedation. I take my night meds when I want to go to bed because if I take them and try to stay awake then after about 15 minutes I feel heavy and I get waves of intense sedation. So it's better to take trazodone and head straight to bed.
I didn't get any side effects that I remember. It has helped my anxiety by taking the edge off it (and then my psych added in Pregabalin to take away the rest) and I think the best bit about it is that it means I get a great nights sleep every night. It knocks me out for about 9 hours so I always try to make sure I sleep for that long (go to bed early if you have to be up early) because waking up any earlier means some of the sedation hasnt worn off yet and it can be a struggle to get up and ready.
But I don't really feel any sedation during the day which is good.
