Well it's like how they're now saying that PTSD appears to alter the brain make up, the brain can be fundamentally altered by life events and experiences and more should be put into researching that.
Research is determined by money and money is determined by potential ROI (return on investment). Companies want to sell drugs and scanners so they look for "research" that helps them sell drugs and scanners. Academics want funding so they play ball. They also work for the companies as well as the government agencies. Researchers, officials, manufacturers - all are generally the same group of people wearing different hats at different points in their careers.
